To muddle things up more, my vet has me hold NSAIDs for 48 hours before giving Banamine unless it’s an emergency. Seems like every vet has their own favorite protocol. We give Banamine the night before, the day off, and usually 2 days after on my reactive ponies. Good luck with the vaccinations, I just did tetanus last week, EW&WN in two weeks. Hate this time of year.
This is what my vet suggests as well.
As luck would have it, we had an emergency vist today so we ended up with Banamine on top of his daily fibrocoxib
My horse got into an altercation over the fence with a loose horse last fall. He wasn’t able to put his nose below knee level. I did ask the vet about the situation and was advised that Bute would be more helpful than his daily Previcox, and to give the Bute instead of the Previcox.
My senior started Previcox in November 2022 and has been on it nonstop with the exception of two weeks around an Osphos shot last summer, and is in the middle of another two weeks off for Osphos now. Osphos requires healthy kidney function, and bloodwork is done shortly before. I get it done a week before to be sure we the results come back prior to the Osphos injection. Last year’s test showed normal values for my horse. This year’s hasn’t come back yet.
Oh no! I hope he is okay and you are hanging in there!
Out of curiosity, does anyone know if bute helps a colicing horse at all? Is it not effective at all for colic, or is it less effective than banamine? Would giving previcox & bute together for a couple days lower the risk of your horse colicing in the first place? The science/pharmacology of it all is super interesting
I gave bute for colic once. I had just brought my mare home from a colt starting…where she was a star and I was so excited for the future, to have her colic after I turned her out on grass for 45 min while I unloaded the trailer. She was hand grazed while at the clinic but it was spring grass and rich. Bute was all I had on hand and after giving the vet her vitals over the phone he said to use the bute. It saved a vet call. Between the bute and walking it got her past her gas pains.
