This makes no sense. If you don’t think that breed show dressage scores that fall under the exact same judges and rules “count” for a year end award then how could someone possibly have “earned” their medal scores at a breed show.
USDF medals are rider awards; typically, year-end awards are not. There is a difference.
They also count for year end USDF awards if people choose to participate in those.
My experience when I showed my Arab was that my scores were in the same range at USEF breed restricted Arab shows as they were at an open USEF show. The judge requirements, equipment rules etc. are the same, the only difference is the shows are limited to registered horses (Arab/half Arab in this case).
There is an Arab class called Show Hack where horses are shown under either dressage tack or hunt tack but it’s a completely different set of rules and judging criteria. I believe those horses can warm up in draw reins, etc.
Regarding GMOs, it’s worth doing some research. I have three fairly close and they all have different rules for year end awards. NEDA is the large one and they only count recognized scores. One score has to be from a NY/New England based show. The other two will take either schooling or recognized scores and one has to be from their show.
If that show also offers open Dressage classes, can those hack horses compete on the same day in the Dressage?
GMO awards are not standardized in any way. Our GMO here in Ocala (STRIDE) only accepts scores from our five schooling shows. Other NC Florida GMOs accept recognized show scores; some have two award categories. Many offer WD awards.
SOme, if they accept SS scores, require that the judge be of a certain educational level - either graduated from the L program, or be “r” or above, etc…( no barn owners acting as judge…)
Its really unfortunate the blatant breed bias being exhibited on this thread. One would think with local dressage shows supposedly hurting for entries they wouldn’t be so close minded and not even do any research.
I have no breed bias just breed show bias when it comes to year end awards.
But only for a local gmo? USDF has year end awards and they take the scores.
@lorilu - You made me curious so I looked it up. I only did the dressage classes.
If I’m reading this correctly, it depends on if the show allows cross entries between dressage and the other divisions. If they do, then the dressage dress and equipment rules only apply in the dressage warm up area.
An Open class usually means that there are no breed restrictions and it says that no cross entering is allowed if you show an Arab in the Open dressage class.
The image below is from the USEF Arab dressage rules.
@Bogey2 - Do you have any data to support this? My experience was similar scores at both types of shows with normal variation based on how well/poorly I rode the tests.
I wish there had been a bump! I really wanted to qualify for regionals one year and kept just missing my second qualifying score for First level.
It they enter open dressage classes they are bound by all DR rules from the start to finish.
But sport horse show hack classes follow DR120 and DR121 with the exception of certain attire things so those horses shouldn’t have draw reins.
There is a Show Hack that is judged by Arabian judges that would fall under the regular Arabian rules but that is typically saddleseat type horses now.
If someone is warming up for a dressage class or is in the dressage warm up arena they follow the dressage rules. It’s what the warmup supervisor is for
I had a few Morgan people over the years and I always felt bad when they did open shows because they were usually scored much lower than at the breed shows and it was hard to explain to them that the competition was very different and the judges were usually not the ones who did breed shows.
Can you explain what you mean?
I found that the scores between Morgan and open recognized shows were comparable. What differed were the placings. You might win a test in a Morgan-only dressage lass with a 62%. That same score often wouldn’t get you a ribbon at a big open show.
CDCTA ( the Virginia one)says this about the year end dressage awards
“You can earn points toward Year-End Awards at
all schooling, USEF licensed dressage classes
(example: at recognized breed show), and USEF/
USDF licensed Dressage shows.”
"Scores to be averaged toward the Year-End
Awards may be earned at any USEF licensed
dressage shows OR any schooling show as long
as they are earned under a USEF rated judge or
graduate of the USDF “L” program. Riders will
need to list the judge’s name and rating when
sending in scores for schooling show scores to
count toward Year End Awards. "
The point structure gives more weight to scores from USEF recognized shows.
Note that there is a volunteer requirement (1 day) for the scores to count, so it would not be much use to someone from a different region.
