OK that’s sorta icky. I pay a kid ~$15/hr to muck my 1/3 acre attached dry lot weekly, it has the donks on it 24/7 and three horses at night only this time of year, and then every five or six weekends he does both my one acre paddocks… It’s worth it, he is slow but thorough and he pets on them and deducts the time, it’s actually pretty adorable to look out and see him loving on someone periodically. So no I don’t get angry about him not working
I’m in southeast Virginia and I charge $300 for pasture board. I offer nice pasture, dry lot with run-in in the winter, free-choice hay, 20x40m riding ring with lights, round pen, jumps. The boarders have access to stalls if they want to use them for feeding ETC. the barn has a tack room, electricity and water. I will feed but the cost of grain is extra or owners supplies it. Blanketing, holding for VET or farrier is extra as well. We do not have trails but we have several parks and trails within 30 min trailer distance.
That’s exactly it. Indoor, outdoor, tack room, wash rack, access to trails as amenities. Pasture board, in my case, barn provides and feeds hay 2x daily and feeds my grain/supplements 1x daily.
375, no amenities, small family hobby farm in New Jersey horse country. This is very low for the area.
I don’t have pasture board but pasture board is the same as my set up. Large-ish dry lot pen by herself with shelter and hay fed 2x/day. Hay usually fed year round for the pasture horses as they aren’t supported with grass only.
I have to do or arrange my own cleaning and anything else I want like bedding. We do have 2 outdoor arenas, a trotting track, round pen and a small indoor. Footing is not great in any of the arenas but doable with hoof protection (we have rocks what you get on volcanic base high desert).
Board is going up next month to $305/month.
Susan
$500/mo in Texas. Includes grain and hay twice per day, tack room, wash rack, covered arena with superb footing, trails, round pen.
I have my old guy at a small facility where he has a partially covered pen, and the horses get turnout in ~1 acre pastures each day. They provide hay, and a small amount of shavings, I provide grain/supplements. They feed 3x a day and clean almost every day (sometimes it’s 6 not 7 days). Amenties are a porta-john, smallish outdoor arena, cold water washrack and a crowded, often mouse-inhabited feed/tack room. $225/month, but it has been a long time since they’ve raised rates, so I wouldn’t be surprised if and when that does happen. Like others have said, true pasture board here is often lacking any real amenities like a proper riding arena. There is a bigger barn across town with an indoor and 3 outdoors. I think they do have a pasture board option there for around $500.
Virginia:
$195 pasture board at a ‘questionable’ place. Horses fed from round bales. Small lighted arena, large run in shed, inside barn area to tack up.
$275 pasture board. Horses fed good grain and hay cubes plus are on a 20 acre pasture. Horses have access to barn with fans. Tack room and moderate sized lighted arena.
$475 pasture board, but it’s more like a dry lot. Horses fed hay from hay nets and good quality grain, have access to a run in shed. Indoor and outdoor arena.
$550 pasture board at a barn with a trainer. Horses fed good hay and grain and have run in sheds in the fields. Field is a little muddy. Indoor and outdoor arenas.
How big is the turnout? I would probably tackle the shelter and keep it clean but if the turn out is at least 2 acres it shouldn’t be too bad.
about 1/2 - 3/4 acre where my horse is, the others are smaller. All around the gate area it’s nothing but loose dirt / old degraded horse manure.
Can find some sketchy fencing pastures with zero amenities around here for $150-200/month.
Actual boarding barns (so tack room/wash rack/arenas/etc.) that offer pasture board are anywhere from $350-500. The lower end most likely only providing round bales in the winter and no grain.
I know I’ve thought about offering retirement pasture board at my house and would have to charge at least $300/month to account for extra facility maintenance/upkeep (but I would include grain/blanket changes/run-in/etc.).
“Pasture board” is really rare near me but there are a lot of places doing the paddock paradise thing and they’re charging 400-600 a month. I do self care pasture board at a private place with an arena and a tack room for 150/month but I’m super lucky.
