It’s really not college or trade schools. Life would be so simple if choices were so simple.
Here is the deal. If you want to work at corporate office, with air conditioning and decent benefit, get a college degree. Without it, you are almost guaranteed to be stuck at entry levels, and that entry levels pay squat.
Among college degrees, you are better off getting a STEM. You are totally unmarketable, if you aren’t lucky enough to get into a corporate office, and happens to have that liberal art degree.
If you hate air conditioning in stemming hot days, or dry heat blowing on your head in freezing winters, or simply don’t have the propensity for STEM, do yourself a favor, and get into a trade. You will get paid squat to begin with, but have good chance in making decent money in, say, 10 years, if you work hard. All the plumbers and electrician companies around my area run a full schedule; and yet, I have personally see one plumber and one electrician in five years quit their jobs and find an office job. Both dudes were folks that happened to come to my place to do some work in these five years. Why? Only the guy running the shops make good money. The guys working for the owners make squat, and worse, have lousy benefit.
