Grain once a day

I’m paying over $20 for 50 lb bales of Timothy or O/A mix. Straight alfalfa is a bit cheaper per lb.

Premium feeds are pretty expensive too. Ultium Gastric Care or TC Sr Gold run $30 for a 50 lb bag. The TC Gold Balancer is around $45.

Locally grown hay is of course cheaper. $12 per 50 lb bale at Tractor Supply and cheaper direct from farmer.

I’ve been buying some T/A cubes recently but I’ll have to check the receipt for the cost. I try not to think about that too much lol.

On topic, my current horse eats “grain” twice a day. He only gets a RB so that could be fed all at once but he needs his sweating supplements twice a day in season. So for me a facility that only fed once a day would not be acceptable to me. Moot point as he lives at home with me.

is that the wet or dry weight of beet pulp? Dry weight would be a HUGE volume if it’s then soaked. I’m really curious why most of that 7lb is a higher volume:calorie feedstuff, rather than most of it being a higher calorie:volume feedstuff like whatever the pelleted feed is.

When I got my mare she had been in relatively heavy work and was fed 1 cup of ration balancer twice a day by her previous owner.

Based on my vet’s advice, as her workload was greatly decreased by coming to live with me, my mare now gets a handful of beet pulp which I soak and add camelina oil to along with 1 cup of ration balancer only on the days I’m out to work her. So some weeks she gets it 3 times a week, so weeks she gets it 7 times a week.

She is on round bale hay in her paddock and when I bring her in I feed a flake of alfalfa before we work, then she gets her “grain” after we work.

I was worried about her not getting enough to eat, not enough nutrients etc etc but the vet assured me this would be more than sufficient. A year later she is still looking great.

I had one like that. A nosebag was a lifesaver. I’d strap it on him out in the pasture and go back in a while to remove. Nobody bothered him but if he was low in the pecking order I could see issues with chasing. And one time he tried to drink with it on and that was ill advised…

yeah, the other 2 would no way leave him alone if they smelled food in there!
