We did this in May for our Maine Coon cat, Toby. He died in my arms, on our bed, and our vet and vet tech let themselves out. We had chosen ahead of time to take Toby ourselves to the crematorium when we were ready.
I can’t imagine having to have taken him to the office.
I have had several PTS at home; it’s so nice & peaceful and the other animals can say their goodbye’s as well.
I use a small animal vet for all my regular dog/cat care. Since we have several of each it’s easier on me and on them.
Last year when we had to have our 20 year old cat euthanized, it was MUCH easier on her to have it done in our living room, lying on my lap.
It was still sad but at least she didn’t have to undergo the stress of going to a clinic.
My old guy is going to be 15 in December and he was never suppose to live past 10. My mom and I have been talking about in home euth because he is arthritic and getting him in the truck is so hard now-a-days. He also hates the vet’s office since his favorite and long time vet moved cross-country.
We’ve decided that when he is ready that he’ll be able to pass peacefully on his own dog bed in his own house surrounded by love.
I just had my 17-year-old dog put to sleep. At home. It was wonderful. She was napping when the vet got here, woke up long enough to sniff the stranger, and then went back to napping. The vet got it done quickly and it was the most peaceful, non-stressful euthanasia I’ve ever seen.
I highly, highly recommend it.
I really wish I had this option 3 weeks ago. There is nothing worse than having to make that phone call, then having to go stand in the waiting room knowing what is coming. I would gladly pay extra for the service; it would take a lot of stress away from the pet and the owner.
I tearfully actually wrote a note to my vet to request this back in 2004 and she did so.
My horse vet is mobile and she has put down one of my dogs and will likely put down the other when his time comes.
Not sure about cats…if she can reach that vein or not. But otherwise – it’s the same stuff, so it doesn’t have to be a small animal vet.
