green cheek conures..

These are spot on and anyone considering bringing their first parrot home needs to really read this and think on them, but in all honesty this is parrot ownership in general. It’s not just a GCC thing, it’s pretty much all of them…to one degree or another.

The majority of parrots are pairbond species who spent nearly every waking moment in some form of contact with their mate. They are constantly squabbling and bickering in larger social groups where they use their beaks as a means of enforcing their desires. They are hardwired to be incredibly picky and MESSY eaters who take one bite and fling their food. They are also hardwired to use their voice to communicate to other flock members over distances that may actually be measured by the mile (ie they are LOUD). And they have incredibly rapid digestion so they poop roughly every 20 mins, larger species a little less frequently and smaller species a little more.

Couple that with the fact that their bodies have been designed by evolution to fly miles every day, an act that requires such an incredible expenditure of energy and calories that they are among the most extreme animal athletes. They also have been gifted with a brain that rivals toddler age humans in its capacity for exploration, inquisitiveness and chaos!

Parrots are not for everyone. But for those who do enjoy them the negatives are just something you work around because the positives outweigh them for you. But again, just like with other non domesticated animals, parrots are not pets that just fit seamlessly into an owner’s life. In many cases they are pets that you actually have to mold your life around.

No, she didn’t kill it. I also will say she is describing any and every parrot species , lol.

Parrots have not been bred for domesticity like dogs or cats. They have the mentality of 3 to 5 yr old children. They do require more attention than the average pet and you will wind up adapting your world to theirs, lol. The times I have moved I always look for the house to see how it will fit with my birds needs.

All parrots scream and can be noisy , a lot of it is how you deal with it. Conures: the worst screamers I have heard are sun conures and golden conures. And to me noise is relative, what you find loud may not be to me. Having lived with macaws and amazons a conures scream may sound dull, lol. Good sound muffling head phones help.

My one piece of advise…whatever you do don’t get “dramatic” around a parrot. They LOVE drama and will respond and re-enact whatever they did to get a Drama Reward from you.

I have lived with 6 parrots for 20+ years. I do not recommend 6, lol But if you are serious about living with one and this one intrigues you then he is the bird for you.!! Will you get bitten, yes, will he scream at times, yes. will he make messes and poop a lot, yes. No carpet and a shop vac work well in the “bird room”

Educate yourself as to diet, find a good avian vet, if you buy him take him immediately for a check up and get him tested for psittacosis and make sure you got a healthy bird.

It sounds to me like you really want this bird. Species doesn’t matter as much as the right bird and birds usually pick us! Your life will never be the same, but that can be a good thing. I smile and laugh a lot at home!

Green Cheeks don’t have nearly as loud a voice as their Sun/Cherry Head/Nanday cousins. They originate from a different part of South America. I think they are in with the Aztec Conure group which is really cute. Some even say a few words. If I had to get a Conure, I would get a Green Cheek in a second. They do have great personalities and you should have a lot of fun with him. Conures don’t normally pick a favorite person like an Amazon or Grey would. They are more about playing with whoever is around and available. They are very similar to Caiques in terms of personality.

As for teflon, besides cookware, frying pans, baking sheets, etc. Be aware that those cooking bags are also non-stick and very lethal. Also those newer frying oven things. (I can’t remember what they are called) Irons, space heaters, just look all around your house for things with that coating.
