Grooming arena when footing is only 2" deep -- help!

I bet craigslist would find you a used box spring in no time. Or maybe call a mattress store? I bet they haul the old ones away for people.

This is what I have been using lately and it does work pretty well. I have a 5x5 section of chain link fence with a 5’ piece of telephone pole on top to weight it down.

I went to the dump last weekend to look for bed springs or something similar but could not find anything. The dumps people looked at me like I was a crazy horse lady.
  Of course you’re a crazy horse lady. Most of us on the board are!

Good idea. My farmer found the one he gave me in one of his fields.

What does everyone use with similar shallow footing?
Just a harrow with the tines facing up. I’m not trying to dig into the surface at all - I’m just knocking the high points into the low points. I do not have GGT though.

I’ve also used old-school heavy wire chain link fencing. The wire has to be seriously heavy though.

I have a chain harrow and am going to try that next, with the tines flipped up. The problem I have is that when I’m done dragging, I can’t just drag it out of the arena gate, as I have gravel directly outside.

Where do you store your harrow when you are done dragging?

Seriously, I’m kinda DONE with the GGT. It’s good in the footing but you have to keep the footing very wet or it floats to the top. I’m in CA and a major drought, so really don’t feel right drawing well water to keep my GGT wet…

We just leave it outside next to the indoor arena gate. (No horses use that gate btw)

I use an old gate from a chainlink fence, with 2 cinderblocks on top, anchored in the front. The stability that the gate frame provides, plus the cinderblocks, gives the drag a little more “dig”, vs just the chainlink alone. (But it’s just for smoothing / routine leveling. It won’t fix major bumps.)

I drag an all sand arena using 4 4x4s parelled. Due to ring size they are 8’. 2x4s run along the top to hold it together and keep from shifting. Does a great job smoothing and leveling the ring.

That is a really good idea!

I’d like to try this but am having trouble picturing it. So you have 4, 4x4s that are right up against each other, with a few 2x4s tying them together? Is there any space between the 4x4s? Can you post a picture? I’d like to try this, it sounds like it might work.

I have a basic chain drag I bought at TSC for about $250. Pull it with my lawn mower - works great for my (currently too thin) footing.
