Gut motility?

It’s a Triple Crown product … chopped timothy and orchard grass. Called “grass forage”. Nutritionally not too much different and he is eating it so yay!

You might speak to your vet about bethanachol. It’s only 4 pills, but it is 3 times per day. But that has seemed to make a big difference. Alternatively, it could be the ceterizine … ceterizine is cheap (20 pills twice a day, buy bottles by the case on amazon) and has virtually no side effects.

Oh sorry … I see she’s diagnosed with hypermotility. Bethanachol would make that worse, probably. But ask about the ceterizine.

My horse has had fecal water, also known as free fecal water. I called it juicy hay. Quite a few horses have it when there is a hay change, but for a few days. His poop balls were formed but very wet. Fecal water is brown water he squirts out his rectum between poops. It runs down the butt, through his butt crack towards the sheath, and down his legs. There were dry crusted patches that needed to be scrubbed. It extended at least 6" from the crack. I had to clean it up daily. He made it easier most of the time by separating his back legs so I could clean the crack. That tells me he knew his skin would feel better.

After reading what I dug up about leaky gut with an occasional mention of fecal water I decided it must have something to do with the health of the lining of his intestine. Psyllium is used for leaky gut and some of the biproducts of the psyllium are helpful for fecal water. It seemed worth a try, so this is anecdotal.

I get my supplements from HorseTech.com so I talked to Rod, the owner. I decided to try SandTrap because it is psyllium with probiotics. We started in mid-July. It took a couple of months to see real results but once it got started it seemed like it must be the SandTrap. I didn’t make any other changes to his diet. It’s speculation, but it must have helped the lining of the digestive system repair itself. It has probiotics and some ground flaxseed. Fecal water is seen in starved horses. My guy wasn’t starved but he was malnourished at his prior barn. His poop is back to the usual formed balls without excess water.

It was added to his PM dinner. This barn has 20 horses and each one has a custom recipe for each meal: AM PM and late night. Barn staff put it in a big Walmart plastic cup and filled it with water. It sat while they fed other horses so the psyllium could absorb the water and not stick together in a lump. They dump it in the tub and stir everything together with a lot of water which he enjoys. I started to see a big improvement in late November and December. Now it is a trickle. I can let it go for a few days and curry to clean it up.

He is 27 and in great condition. He doesn’t look or act his age. I’m 73 and feeling older much faster than he is.
