The second craziest thing is that it really doesn’t bother anyone involved. It’s just life with Hackneys. I know some Amish Hackneys and they are just as hot.

I remember the evening performances at the old open ASHA shows out on the west coast. All the disciplines showed together. Old, as in 80s,Mrs Smith in her sparkling evening gown would be helped out of her wheelchair and into a buggy well back from the arena. The groom would lead the alert, excited but calm Hackney to the in gate, she would pick up the reins in white gloved hands and that Pony? Still held by the groom, looked into the bright lights and those legs started pumping like pistons in the highest, most expressive piaffe you ever saw for almost a full minute. Groom let go and they swept into the ring like the Queen into a ball.

Shows aren’t like that any more:confused:. But I’ll never forget that Hackney with those legs going like pistons waiting to be released for that grand entrance. When they came out of the ring, one groom took hold of the rein by the bit, another took the reins from her while she was helped back into the chair and Pony turned it off and walked back to the barn with the buggy in tow. Amazing.

Fixed (I think)

The new links seem to require a sign-in…

They require a sign in, which is sad because I’ve always loved hearing about your ponies, Silk and was excited to see them. Oh well.

My very first pony was a hackney cross who was a champion fine harness pony back in the early 60’s. He was the sweetest, gamest pony ever. Definitely knew and loved the show ring… Knew what the announcer was saying and would just get so pumped up. Was a champion numerous times, but never in the hunters. Too much knee action. I kept him until he died at over thirty years of age.
