Hail storms. What to do?

I’d lock them in their stalls. But then I am always neurotic about my horses. My mares also know to go into their stalls to avoid rain and hail, but I still put them up. As for Cloudy, well, good thing he always has a mare to tell him what to do.

I don’t leave mine out when there is lightning or thunder. I know many who have had horses struck by lightning.

Thanks again to all for the insights. It’s interesting to read the differing points of view and reasoning behind them.

As for my house, we have a local contractor we trust who will be coming out to take a look this week. He did the replacements on our roof and a couple of our neighbors after the ember damage from the 2013 fire here in Black Forest (the fire came within 50 yards, burning our closest neighbor’s house to the ground and destroying a 700 acre forest behind our property). I’m hoping we won’t have to replace, as the roof is only three years old, but I think it’s likely we will based on the damage to our truck and deck.

Make sure you get your insurance company buy in on the roof replacement and what they’ll cover before you start

You’ve had a rough few years in BF (I lived there for a number of years). My old house didn’t burn but 1 1/2 houses in the same subdivision did…

We have frequent hail storms in the summer. Horses are always brought in undercover. If the stones are large enough, head injuries to horses can be quite severe, and our vets have some horror stories of horses losing eyes to hail.
