No one has ever said “don’t tow with a half ton truck”! People are saying it is not a wise idea to pull a 3 horse gooseneck with a half ton truck. There is a big difference.
Someone said up front to not tow at all without a 3/4 ton or bigger truck.
It’s possible a 3 horse goose would the same length and weight as a two horse straight and there are lots of people who use the 3rd stall for tack. I have no idea as I have not compared weight ratings.
I’m truck shopping and it’s darn near impossible to find long beds now. They only seem to come with regular cabs. I had hoped to get a bench in back to throw groceries but I’ll settle for a long bed with 4x4.
What’s your payload rating? Your axle rating? Your tire rating? Your GVWR? Are you well within all of those margins with a loaded gooseneck trailer? The tow rating is only one small piece of the picture.

I was able to find some, but the reality is for what most people use a pickup for, 176" wheelbase is the kind of truck you can’t park anywhere and they just don’t sell.
I’ve got a supercab short bed F250 and it’s a behemoth. The 176 model would be for trailer only as that is just too much truck to take anywhere else.

The gooseneck adds quite a bit of mass to a trailer - your average 2h aluminum bp straight w/ dress might weight 2500-2800lbs and is around 16’ on the floor, but add a gooseneck and you’re adding at least 700lbs just for the added metal.
Depends on the truck- I have added “try parking in some horrible spot” to my test drive rules for this reason.
Personal truck (& horse hauler) is an extended cab, long 8’ bed 2001 F250. My last 2 work trucks have been extended cab short bed 1500 Silverados (2008 & 2015). Chevy has not figured out parkability- I can put my F250 just about anywhere, but both Silverados have the turning radius of a hippo in rigor mortis. I’m glad I didn’t pay for them, I curse them often.
I didn’t think I would love the long bed, but omg, I do love the one I was lucky to find. Bonus: every time I rumble that turbo diesel up to hardware store, all the boys be jealous, lol, they wish they could lay their sheets of plywood flat & still turn around the loading bay.
Try a new F250 before you get too hooked. My new '18 250 resembles your rigor remark because it is just massive - way taller, wider, everything-er than my 2002 it replaced. It tows like a champ, though, so I’m not complaining.
That is one more reason we have always had half tons.
Next size up tends to be so much beefier, way more than we want for an every day farm truck.
Is hard to work out of them, getting in and out a million times a day.
The half tons have pulled the trailers we haul just fine.
If you’re looking for a truck, try carguru.com. I’ve bought my last 2 trucks by using their search engine, both of which people swear on COTH rarely exist (2012 Dodge 3500 Dually 4x4 manual long bed, 2017 3500 Ram chassis body dually manual crew cab 4x4 9’ bed). My DH has a extra short bed Dakota and that thing is completely useless for hauling anything- can’t even put a sheet of plywood in it.
Lol, well, I guess I will never know since my budget means that when 7.3L disintegrates, I just have to walk everywhere.
