Yeah, good point. Or when the one person you have with you WATCHES your class and forgets to video.

Turns out we got day-end Champion in our division (green horse). The show secretary e-mailed me last night.
Our first blue ribbons & first Champion ribbon in the same day! Not too shabby!

Thanks! Its actually fitted correctly, maybe the picture makes it seem low on his head. The throatlatch piece is fitted exactly where it needs to be, and the nosepiece is just below the cheekbone point. If I lifted it any higher, it would be rubbing on his cheekbone.

We’ve been trail riding in between shows, that’s what I really like to do anyways!
I’m going to post in the Horse Care section to see if anyone has suggestions for why a barefoot horse would be fine all summer long, and now suddenly be ouchy while trail riding. He’s 6 years old, never had shoes, never needed them. On a graded dirt road he may have caught a stone or two and reacted appropriately, but on ANY other footing he was 100% while going along barefoot. The lady that I ride with also has her gelding barefoot, and he’s been fine too. Lately, over the past two weeks, they have both been VERY ouchy, even on trails and dirt roads that are smooth (minimal small gravel, which they were prefectly fine on before) but now they are both hop-a-longs. Any thoughts? Nothing has changed in diet, riding, farriers, nothing. The road conditions aren’t any different either. What didn’t bother them all summer long is now making them ouchy.

A thought for the hoof tenderness…the horses I have/had that had really nice feet for barefoot will get tender from super hard ground and rocks on top of that while trailriding, fine in the arena. Rocks roll under their feet etc, and also, after being ridden out regularly, they wear their feet down too short to be comfortable barefoot. Then front shoes or full shoes, or hoof boots may become necessary.
My little AQHA mare has a shellier foot, so can’t go barefoot during the summer and I ride alot all winter, so she still has fronts on then. If we get real winter, then shoes come off.

His foot structure holds up well, they are not brittle, cracking, peeling, etc. Nice hard feet. They were fine last summer and the summer before riding barefoot all summer long. I am trying a new farrier on Friday, and am going to ask him what he thinks.
Ask the farrier about sole depth, if he has too much retained sole, it makes his foot too flat and can cause tenderness. Also, the bars, same thing. Can cause discomfort if the bars are too long. A good bare foot should have concavity to the sole, and the horse shouldn’t be walking on the soles of his feet. If the walls are smooth but worn to short, that can cause the horse to be on the sole.
I am sure you will get more why’s and because’s on your other post. Don’t be surprised if the farrier recommends at least front shoes. You have been doing a lot of riding and that really wears their feet down. Shoes aren’t a bad thing in an active horse.
That would make sense because the farrier doesn’t take off any sole/bar material. His underside does not appear as concave as it used to be.
I mentioned this in the other thread. Thank you for mentioning that! I’m moderately educated when it comes to feet (enough to know when I see soemthing that doesn’t look right, but am not familiar with the terminology).
I will also mention this to the new farrier on Friday.
About the feet - wet weather can make them soft, and dry conditions can result in hard ground and bruising. You may have to put front shoes on him; that shortened stride due to ouchy feet can cause more problems higher up in his shoulders and back. Your horse is SO cute! Good luck and have fun!
