Hardware Removal!

Yes mickeydoodle is right on.

I had mine out in the nick of time, the screws. I still have my rod though.

I look at this way, if I get burned beyond recognition, they will still be able to identify me by my titanium rod. I am sure it has a serial number on it.

I’m over 2 months post hardware removal and it is GREAT! I do have to take something for the bit of pain I have, but the med works like a charm. I can run! I can ride! I can POST! It doesn’t hurt!

I rode my mare yesterday, the one I fell off and broke my leg. We trotted an elevated pole and everything :D. At one point we cantered around a turn and she slipped/stumbled pretty good and I had a brief “oh sh*t, I’m going to fall off again” moment of panic, but I stayed on and she righted herself and it was fine. It was a great ride. I finally feel like I’m going to get back to normal!

I had an ortho appointment a couple days ago and I’m all better and don’t have to go back again! Woot!

Congrats!!!

Hardware removal

Three years ago I fell and broke the tibia, fibula, and ankle, I have a rod on the tibia, and a plate and screws on the fib and ankle. My ortho has always said removing the hardware is not something he wants to do because the rod is next to an artery and a nerve, and the surgery would be a longer and more difficult than in the beginning, plus a much longer recovery time. However, now I have a great deal of pain, and am scheduled for a bone scan next week, to see if it may be stress fractures. He thinks its coming from the hardware and says we may have to remove it all. Any thoughts out there?

Hello. I have joined this forum in hopes of getting in touch with you as I am doing research about people with tibial rods without screws long term.

How is your IM rod without screws today and can you still run, jump and exercise?
