I used to have my gelding on PrimeGlo for a couple of years before the monensin contamination incidents. I switched him over to Purina Enrich, which he likes just fine, but hasn’t done quite as well on it. He doesn’t need more than 1-2 lbs of grain per day; he get free access to hay and/or pasture and will start swinging from the trees if he gets too much grain. I’d like to switch him back to ADM, but I don’t know if I trust them. Anyone heard if they’re taking extra steps to prevent contamination?
I won’t buy ADM feeds because of that monensin contamination incidents. Have you tried Triple crown 30%?? think it’s probably better then purina’s Enrich,i’am not a purina fan never have been. Haven’t heard on whether or not ADM got their act together yet or not.
I will not buy horse feed from any producer which runs cattle feed. Only horse feed should be purchased from producers who do not run anything but horse feeds because of the monensin contamination I’ve read about for over 20 years.
What do you mean by “hasn’t done as well”? You understand that the two feeds are designed to be fed differently and to meet slightly different needs. The ADM Primeglo is designed to be fed at a higher rate than the Enrich 32 and has a higher fat content (therefore more calories and more fatty acids).
How much of the PrimeGlo were you feeding? It’s meant to be fed at minimally 2-3lb for a 1000lb horse (.2-.3lb/100lb).
Ration balancers are 1, maybe 1lb/day unless the horse is really large, working very hard, or heavily pregnant.
You swapped more of a regular feed, for a ration balancer. You lost calories.
It may also be that he doesn’t do as well on Enrich in particular. There are better quality RBs out there, and one of those may suit him better. It sounds like you weren’t feeding enough of the PG anyway.
Snark aside, I did read and follow the feeding directions for both feeds. He got 2 lbs of the PrimeGlo and gets about 1.25 lbs of the Enrich. I added Cool Calories for a while to the Enrich to add fat, but he stopped eating the CC so now he just gets the Enrich. He’s maintained his weight pretty well on that, plus all the timothy/alfalfa he can eat in the winter and pasture in the summer.
sassy45, I’ll look into the Triple Crown. The local feed store just started carrying TC, so I’ll see what varieties they carry. It looks like the TC Lite is similar to the PrimeGlo, so I can see how the Drama King does on that.
There was no snark. They were questions to figure out how big a change you made, and what “hasn’t done as well on it” actually means.
You assumed that I didn’t know that the feeds were different types and that I was underfeeding the PrimeGlo. I know that they were not equivalent feeds, but I had to work with what I had. At the time, the local feed store was carrying ADM, limited varieties of Purina, Nutrena, and their own oats and sweet feed. Didn’t have a lot of choices, unfortunately. :nonchalance: I personally don’t like Nutrena since a former BO got 5 bags of moldy feed from them and their response was “meh.” Now the feed store is carrying TC and (I think) Hubbard, so I have a few more choices.
Basically what I mean by “not doing as well” is his coat isn’t as shiny and he’s not as interested in the Enrich as he was in the PrimeGlo. He’s not in poor condition by any means, just not in the peak of condition.
When someone says “I was using a lite feed and switched to a ration balancer and he’s just not doing as well” and that’s that, well yes, usually that’s because someone thinks RBs are a magic pill that you can just replace anything with and had the horse do wonderfully. You didn’t mention CC until after 2 people asked more questions.
I don’t think I could ever trust ADM. It wasn’t just the contamination, it was also the fact that they would never step up to the plate and admit what had happened, that they were at fault and what they were going to do about the problem. I have no confidence in them whatsoever.
That said - TC is a good choice. So are pretty much all the other RBs, even Nutrena. TC 30, or, closer to what you were doing before, TC Lite.
