I read and saved an article on Folding a Horse several years ago and was happy to remember it when I had my horse euthanized. I had the ropes draped over him before we put him down. We have 10 -15 horses buried on the farm. My brother in law told me this was the easiest he had buried. He said one of the worst thing is hearing bone break as they are landing but when “folded” mine had a softer landing and the hole didn’t have to be as large. As hard as it was that did make me feel better.
From a scientific and intellectual perspective this is fascinating; thank you for sharing.
Would not do it myself- but it sounds like your friend and I have different outlooks on the body’s relationship with the spirit of the horse, and it was clear from your post that this was deeply important to her. I hope that she feels comfort when her beloved friend is either cremated or laid to final rest.
You are a good friend.
OP, I just want to repeat that you are a GOOD friend.
I’m not sure what I was expecting you to update with, but this was not it. Weird to say, but what a lovely update.
Thank you.
I too really appreciated this thread.
it was sensitive, interesting, and I think important for all of us to know.
Hugs to you and to your friend.
I’m glad so many people have come away with appreciation for the post I wrote. I appreciate all of the kind words and I’m so glad to be able to share the experience. She picked him up from the crematorium Monday. He was the first one to “spend the night” at the new farm.
Thanks again for all of the kind words, and I hope anyone coming here looking for this information can find it’s usefulness in making a decision like the one my friend did, or at minimum, rest a curious mind
Really interesting to read about this experience and learn a lot of new information, and thank you for both sharing it and for being an awesome friend.
Thank you for posting this.
I have a horse buried on my farm more than twenty years gone. I’ve often wondered how much is left and hope nobody ever unearths her after I am gone.
I know this is an old thread
I’d like to repeat what many others have said. You are a very good friend to have been there for your friend
Agreed, and thanks @Hayla for bumping this thread up. I never saw it at the time it was posted. What a treasure it is, so incredibly interesting and oddly very comforting. Thank you, @One Two Three for sharing with us.
I did not read the whole thread.
Did they say how they transported the remains to a new location?
I just skimmed the thread, but I’m pretty sure the owner collected bones from the excavator-dug pit by hand (the machine exposed but did not remove the remains) so I assume she put them in a box or similar to carry them herself to her new place.
