reminder, here he is the day i brought him home
weaning him onto grass…little bit more every day
Just hay alone for this one because she came wild and i couldn’t turn her out to pasture until she got tamed down. Here’s this poor little ponymare right after i got her here (straight from BLM)
same little mare, exactly one year later with the BLM inspector
My barn feeds an altered version of Strategy or so they tell me, which they have specially made without sugar and starch. Their horses all look really shiny and healthy. I don’t interact with their horses to know if they’re goofy or hot, so I can’t speak on that, but they all have exceptionally nice coats and muscle. They also get free choice hay, too. My Fjord does not get the delicious Strategy except a tiny handful so that she eats her bran.
If they actually said that, they don’t know what they’re talking about. No feed has 0 sugar or starch
Are you referring to the SmartEdge? If so, that’s a Tractor Supply-specific version of Health Edge
Or are you referring to some custom mix? Even if that’s the case, it absolutely does have sugar and starch
They claim it’s a custom mix. I have no idea what they put into it, but this is what they relayed to me.
I buy my own food. My kid is just picky about the bran I feed her, so sometimes I drop a little bit of the sweeter stuff so she eats it. Mine gets Max-e-glo right now.
Unless it’s just fat and indigestible fiber, with straight vitamins and minerals, there are sugars and starch.
@eightpondfarm They look great! Nothing more rewarding than that. I am thankful to have good grass myself except when I have to put the GG on my mare!! We are getting close to that time.
That’s good to know! Thank you!
Well, my filly is back on Omolene 300 (I cant get Ultium Growth) and within 3 weeks she is back down to where she was before. It sure does make handling her much more enjoyable. Strategy must be best suited for those heavily used horses that are showing or performing a lot.
No. My young guy is only very lightly started and spends 22+ of the 24 hours in the day at pasture.
Just another reason why we have to try a feed to see how our horse does on it, even though 1000+ can give it a glowing review it may not work for your horse.
My broodmares and foals did excellent on Omolene 300 but many will tell a different story if you ask around. Find what works best for you and your horse and use it, is my way of thinking.
My youngest mare was on Strategy ( I think Healthy Edge) when I got her. She was in an awkward growth stage and was kind of skinny. She was also pretty reactive. I had to make a two hour round trip to the feed store that carried Healthy Edge and finally I said “forget this”. I put her on a ration balancer and filled up her hollow leg when she stopped growing. Partly with really good quality hay. She is now an air fern and looks great. Now I need to get her to lose weight. She is still reactive and spooky. Mostly her innate temperament although working with her has helped a lot. However I have not noticed that she changes with feeding her different feeds. Same pill no matter what she eats.
