I suggested the OP have her horse scoped to assess what she’s actually dealing with. But I did respond to her questions about the dose my vet recommended. And actually I had some better success using Nexium for tapering (easier to control dose) than the time I had the most trouble weaning–which was from a course of Gastrogard. But when I tapered with Nexium I had already learned to put my horse on Succeed from the previous experience with Gastrogard. Or maybe he was still on it… I can’t recall. There was a long period in which he would have ulcer flares from injections before I connected those dots that I was also dealing with his other gut things… I do remember that he was on Succeed continuously for quite a long time and I had a hard time getting him off of that too and managing his gut, but that was not ulcer or PPI related.
If OP’s horse has lesions that are not healing, that might have to do with dose. But maybe not. Maybe he has delayed gastric emptying or some other problem. Maybe it’s ulceration in the portion of the stomach that doesn’t respond to PPIs alone. Maybe she is just getting a mood side effect from the PPI and he doesn’t have ulcers at all. Maybe he is just reacting to the overproduction of acid that PPIs cause when you stop taking them.
