I suspect that even if you build a slide you’re going to have hay scraps around. When you say “screenings” do you mean the floor onto which you’re dropping the hay is gravel so you can’t easily sweep it up? The tarp is the best idea - or as you mentioned, tossing it directly outside so they can eat the scraps.
