Heaves + Essential Oils

Just now seeing this post. How are things now with your horse? For what it’s worth, here is one way I’ve used essential oils.

My horse does not have heaves but he was having a terrible time getting over a cough last winter, even after a lot of treatment. He was much better, but a mild cough did linger. I used Doterra brand, Breathe (their respiratory blend) and Copaiba. I put a little bit of fractionated coconut oil in my hand, added one drop of Breathe, and rubbed on his chest. I also put 3-4 drops of Copaiba on a horse treat and gave that to him once a day. Not sure which of these helped the most, or maybe he would have gotten better anyway, but his cough completely disappeared within a week of doing this. I’m not completely sold on the Breathe but I am on the Copaiba. It is a really great oil and one I use on myself often. Both of these are safe for use on horses, even the Copaiba being taken internally. Copaiba has the same therapeutic compounds as CBD (without the high), it’s good for inflammation, respiratory issues, immunity, cardiovascular, and more. It also strengthens other oils it’s used with. So if you use an essential oil for therapeutic reasons, add Copaiba to strengthen it. Some things to remember, always use pure essential oils, not cheap knock offs. Also, always introduce the oil to your horse before using it. They will tell you if they are ok with it or not. If they look irritated, look away, etc, don’t use that oil. My horse perked his ears up, lowered his head, and licked his lips when I introduced these oils.

I’m a believer in essential oils but also in modern medicine. I think each person needs to find what works for them. My vet is 100% on board with the oils that I use. Let me know if you have any questions.
