Heaviest rug on the market?

The Rambo wool cooler is great for this IMO.

I layer but sometimes I think the combined weight and pull can be uncomfortable long term for horses. Like how a badly fitting bra/sweater can be uncomfortable for us.

Just adding a cooler as the bottom layer helps significantly. I would guess the cheapie fleece coolers add about 50g worth of warmth. The wools probably add 150g. My unscientific observation after running my hands under their blanket, of course.

For my mare as long as the chests are closed and the back is clipped to the tail-strap D-rings, I don’t bother with the wither velcro.

It was the same here! We were still riding outside into late November, in mid-weights until December, and them BAM. Just weeks on end with no reprieve. It has snowed every day this week too (we have about a foot), but luckily that is helping with the ice.

Like @beowulf said, I don’t like leaving them in layers for this long because they are just constantly carrying so much weight. Unfortunately the only other alternative right now is leaving them in the barn, which I like even less. I do think we’re supposed to get a break next week :crossed_fingers:

I also used to use a wool dress sheet as a base layer until I got something else. I don’t prefer going that route for outside horses because if it slips from under the outer layers and gets soaked in snow when the horse lies down, wet wool is a pain to deal with. But for an inside layer it does work.

@Arzny, good luck on the lab work telling you something you can use to help him! Mine is a senior with Cushings and a bum thyroid. He is Irish and grows a proper native breed coat but just doesn’t have the cold resilience he used to as a young horse who would strip off his rugs in the field. It’s an ever-evolving puzzle, but at least once you know what you’re dealing with you understand how it needs to be managed and can go on about doing so.

Tie little loops out of string or twine. Put those loops on the first liner, then attach that liner to the outer layer. Then attach the second liner to the string loops.

Caveat - that’s what I would try. I have never done it.

The 1 or 2 times I had to do that for my late mare I attached the bottom liner to the rings on the outer sheet, then slipped the 2nd liner between the 1st liner and the outer sheet and clipped the back to either the outer sheet D rings or onto the bottom liner clip. I then didn’t need to bother with the neck velcros.
Worked fine!

edited for typos

Is there nothing twine won’t solve on a farm?

Brilliant idea.

Agree - genius.

Wait, do the liners have rings on them?

no, they don’t; just the velcro loops :frowning_woman:
Caveat: I have only ever used the Rambo and BoT liners, but neither of them have neck rings. Maybe other brands do?
Actually, what I did also do was to use an Amigo stable rug which DID have rings at the neck, and, using the liner velcro, looped the velcro through both set of rings(stable and outer blanket) and secured them at the neck. THAT worked GREAT. Again, all were Horseware or BoT products
Above I was referring to the butt clips of the liners and the D-ring on the outer blanket- you know how the clip has a swiveling d at the end- works great to clip a 2ndary liner to it

When you find one the answer is duct (or Gorilla) tape! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Thanks! This is a young-ish horse. He’s 13. He’s had some medical issues in the past - neck & back surgery, etc. One potential the vet brought up was that he’s painful, again. We didn’t want to do a lameness on the ice, but that’s also going to be explored if the bloods show nothing.

Kind of yes. There is a new Horseware convertible liner that can be used as a stable blanket or a liner. It has rings where you can put a liner under that. And on top has the velcro to attach to a rug if you don’t want to use the surcingles. I have the 100g and often put a 100g liner under. Usually I use that configuration as a stable blanket, but I will put a turnout on top also (just maybe not Velcro it in if I have the belly straps on). It comes in a 200g version with neck also. It’s called the Easy Layer.
