The Big D Magnum is a fantastic sheet. I found it to be virtually indestructible.
Rambo by Horseware is a very good choice, especially if you are looking for tough and long lasting. You just need to close your eyes when you click that “check out” button. I think I almost fainted when I ordered my very first Rambo. lol.
Love my sheets from Schneiders. They hold up exceptionally well. I have never had one tear.
I’m thinking we’re going to give the schneiders a go! Since I can’t get those easily up here and my friend cam bring me one up, and at $99 us it’s not cringe worthy.
how do these blankets fit? She normally wears a 75 in “average” blankets, her 72s from when she was 3 are too narrow in the shoulders now. I’m hesitant to go to the 74 unless these run on the bigger side?
Blanket shopping with no real return options is stressful!
also anyone use their contour collars?? Yay/nay?
My experience is they fit HUGE! (I ordered a 78" and could easily have gotten away with a 75", or even a 72)
I’d think a 74" would be the largest you would want to order.
Anything BUT Rambo. Total junk as far as waterproof goes. I’ve had five yes five soak completely through (all taken care properly - washed even in Rambo Wash!). Great for durability due to the ballistic nylon but thats about it. All made in Ireland and not China like some nowadays. Thankfully I didn’t pay full price on any of them due to being on close–out. Personally I’d never pay that kind of money for a blanket anyways!
Not a fan of Schneiders either - two I bought about 10 years ago didn’t last one season either for staying waterproof. And durability wise it was a joke and my horse(s) are not hard on blankets at all. I won’t even consider a Schneiders now.
I did not have good luck with Schneiders. It was waterproof to a degree but not completely.
So I just had a new Rambo Wug that got damaged (mouse) so I washed it (as directed) so my mom, who is a sewing wizard, would fix it. After that water went right through it. I was super annoyed and contacted the retailer about the 3 year warranty and they did replace it. It took about 2 months from first contact to replacement but I know have a new sheet.
I wonder what the deal is with Rambo waterproofing. Mine has worked fine.
As to Schneiders, nay, I won’t touch them. I didn’t even get to test their waterproofing, as they (three of them) all got shredded within two hours on horses that had never destroyed anything.
Maybe try a Pessoa? They aren’t built as tough, or as well, as Rambo, but they seem to remain waterproofing (on my horses), and I haven’t heard negative reviews about them.
I had the same bad experience with Rambo sheets regarding losing their waterproofing after one wash. Its EXTREMELY disappointing, because I love their blankets and have no issue with them - but the sheets cannot hold up to a storm out here.
I tried Schneiders as an alternative, and I like the polarfleece lined option, but they rub my TB’s shoulders and forget that neck attachment! Its attached by big snaps, and the wind blows the end of it up and his neck gets soaked. Pointlessly bad design there.
I’m still looking for a sheet that is actually waterproof and fits right. I’m worried about trying Weatherbeeta because I don’t think they fit like a Rambo (no center seam, tent-like).
Maybe I’ll try the Bucas.
I replaced my gelding’s wardrobe this year with the Horze Avalanche rain sheet and mid- and heavy-weight blankets. He is 23 y.o. and boarded outside so fit and durability are crucial. The only reason I considered them is because they were recommended by the owner of the online shop where I got his original blankets. They were the only ones that fit him correctly, but are no longer being manufactured and she was using them on her horses. I tried Weatherbeeta, Pessoa, Smartpak but they just didn’t work.
I looked at the Horze online, and waffled a bit until I looked at them at Equine Affaire in Mass. in November. They are 1200D rip stop polyester and are very well made. They are high neck, but unlike other brands they have a section of fabric added so that the blanket rides over the withers and does not rub. He is narrow in front, which is why a lot of blankets don’t fit well because the neck opening is too large and his shoulders get wet. Horze has 2 sets of T buckles on the chest so they are very adjustable, and huge gussets so there is no rubbing at all. He has been out in them since mid-December and we haven’t had any issues. Also, Horze has a 3 wash guarantee on the waterproofing.
This is good to read and also an indicator that I need to steer clear of these!!! my mare has shoulders like a linebacker.
You may also look at Canadian retailer Greenhawks regular Shedrow lineup if you ever need anything else for your old guy- I really like their stable blankets, they’re nice and low profile as layers but they are too small through the shoulders for my horse. They also have a plaid fly sheet that wears like absolute Iron - i have one of those for Ms. Mare and i bought a size up for her because it doesnt matter quite so much if it fits totally perfect for a fly sheet, but damn if that thing isn’t the most heavy duty fly sheet I’ve ever come across.
I have quite a few horses, and love blankets, so I have just about everything. I really like my Rambo turnout sheet, it is heavy and I love the fit. But today(!) one of the surcingle buckles was broken on a mare who is turned out by herself.
I have a few of the Amigo/Bucas turnout sheets and they have done good service over the years and held up. But for price and durability, I would suggest the Schneiders. I have a couple of them and they are old, and still going strong, no rips or tears.
