Heavy Hunters - What Breed

IBW- Go on FOL, they have a clyde or clyde cross for sale that is listed as just what you are looking for. The lady who owns him is selling because she is 5’3" and has bad hips. It might be a little far out of your area, but maybe worth it.

We have one in the barn, an English Shire/QH cross who stands about 17.1, wears a size 88 blanket and a size 5 shoe. He’s very balanced and catty to ride, with a lovely flowing long trot. He can hunt all day, 3 days a week and not miss a beat. Like JSwan says, when he really gets going don’t get in his way! Luckily he was so beautifully trained that he does his job safely no matter what. (Just watch for the dirt clods!)

We found him through FOL. He’s worth his weight in gold!

I’d love to find someone who wanted to lease my big guy. He’s been evented but I don’t know if he was hunted when he lived in Middleburg, VA or not as a youngster. I bought him at 4 years old and he was too spirited for me so I leased him and he lived at Fair Hill for 2 years. He’s getting up there now and has been sitting around the pasture for a couple years doing nothing. He is so bored and would love a job going cross country, that’s his thing. He’s very handsome. He’s a fully foundational Ranch type Nokota, grey, with the look of the old type French Percheron, a recessive gene over 100 years ago. A French Nobleman, the Marquis De Mores brought these horses over from France and moved to an area now known as Medora, ND on what is now Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Medora was the Marquis wife, an American of German acestry.

The Nokota horse lived in the roughest terrain in the USA, the Badlands. www.nokotahorse.org

Here’s an old photo of him hanging around the pasture before he greyed out.

This is even better, a painting done by a fine artist, Leo is being evented at Fair Hill and so is my pony Teddy, same day. This is him doing stadium jumping. He got second that day because he did knock down a rail. It was his first horse trial I believe.

Nokotas are beautiful horses! I’ve only seen photos of them, though.
