Helmet for Long Oval and Hot Weather

Round helmets really don’t fit me. I would have liked the Trauma Void to work, but it absolutely didn’t fit. The Samishields were also decidedly too round. I think the Troxel works because it has a self adjusting elastic strap system that customizes the helmet fit; similar concept to the dial fit, but requires no wearer adjustment. I rode in it yesterday and found it very comfortable.

Round head here, but I went from the IRH Elite Xtreme to the OneK Defender. I don’t remember much of a difference, maybe the OneK was a smidgen cooler, but I wouldn’t swear in court either way. The Defender does beat the Xtreme in general quality/comfort and not getting larger as it has aged. I found I had to keep adding more and more padding to the Xtreme to keep it snug. YMMV though.

I’m definitely an oval (not sure if long or not) but I love my ovation schooler https://www.ovationriding.com/ovation-schooler-helmet-467566 its SUPER affordable and does not give me the ‘mushroom noggin’ that my CO does. Its super light and works pretty well for summer riding.

Tequila - For what it’s worth, I have a definite long oval head

OneK did not work for me at all. Even their long oval was too round. I actually bought one because it seemed to fit in the store and ended up giving it away after a few rides due to terrible headaches.

So far Charles Owen (specifically the AYR8) and the Uvex work for me. I have tried on the following that didn’t:

  • GPA
  • Samshield
  • Troxel (used to wear one before I realized how bad the fit was)
  • Tipperary (had one of the old models and apparently was one of the few people they fit :). None of the newer ones work for me at all)
  • Antares

Well here’s another question. Which online tack stores, if any, offer free return shipping besides Smartpak? I don’t mind paying shipping one way but both ways for something that might work the first go around is a bit more than I want to spend.

Riding Warehouse does.

Adam’s does too.

I went with the One K Defender. Since I still have my IRH I’ll be able to compare when it arrives next week.

Looking forward to your report on how the One K works out.

You’ll like the OneK. It’s comfortable and looks good.

This is the only think I can wear. I have tried everyone else’s version of a long oval and it’s the only one that fits, heat be damned. The One K did not fit me.

I received the One K Defender yesterday. I love everything about it except it was just barely too small. I wear a size 7 in IRH and I got the medium One K, which is 6 7/8 - 7.

Compared to the IRH the One K is much lighter and cooler. But since it was a tad too small I’m having to exchange it for a large. I’m hoping large isn’t too large or I may be in between sizes and I won’t be able to use the One K. I’ll be very disappointed if that’s the case.
