There were/are wired phones. The first wireless phones were not cell phones. They were also much bigger and cumbersome. The point being wireless technology vs wired.

Oh, I am plenty old enough to know all about the phone mounted to the wall with the long cord you had to take into the next room if you wanted to have a conversation with your friend. Heck, that phone had a rotary dial on it and my one friend was on a party line.
I also had what they called a ‘transportable phone’ back when. It certainly did not fit in a pants pocket.
I was just confused by your reference to ‘wireless cell phones’.

Probably ingrained because I was a customer of Verizon Wireless… for way too long?
