I am finally at the point in my life where I can afford a nice sport horse and would like to re-enter the world of competitive dressage. I am not originally from here, who are the top trainers in the area? I live in Bethesda. Thank you!
can’t speak to the market generally, but Aviva is a fantastic teacher
Becky Langwost-Barlow is based on the Eastern Shore but she teaches weekly at a few barns in Montgomery County, including Wyndham Oaks in Boyds, Merry Go Round in Potomac, and Southwind in Damascus. She’s a successful FEI rider who has trained numerous horses to GP. She’s also a USDF-certified instructor through 4th Level and teaches students from Training Level to GP. She’s very kind and invested in her students’ successes, and she will push you to ride your best.

Donna Gatchell
Lauren Sprieser.
Has trained several horses from green to Grand Prix. Competes at CDIs. Has an amazing facility. Has helped students (including me) go from training level to FEI on horses of all shapes, sizes and breeds.
Fabulous trainer, great system, and a beautiful facility.
I second Donna Gatchell. I ride with her and there’s a reason she’s gotten Trainer of the Year for VADA Nova the past 5 years… she’s excellent and transfers that knowledge to her students. Bethesda may be far though…especially if you have a full time job and want to lesson after work. Traffic is horrible in the metro D.C. Area.
I’ve heard good things about Aviva. Too bad Julio moved to NC. How far is Silva Martin?

Merry-Go-Round in Potomac is the most accessible to Bethesda. Wyndham Oaks is accessible via the back roads, which on most evenings you would want as traffic out the 270 corridor has gotten impossible in the evenings.
Do you currently have a horse or would you would need a schoolmaster to start riding again?
Becky also comes to Waredaca (in between Damascus and Olney) on a regular basis. It’s more of an eventing barn and I don’t know if it’s any easier of a drive than Wyndham Oaks, but another option for you.
Meghan Michaels is fun and is at a private, adult facility. She’s located in Poolesville, MD.
Our farm is quite convenient to Bethesda, as we are just up rte 270 and only a few miles off the highway … so limited back roads, like you get going into poolesville/Boyds area.
Our farm is private (22 stalls, everyone in a training program–we are a family and everyone’s schedule keeps them focused on their horse and enjoying dressage). We have the largest private indoor in Maryland, heated tack room with shower and washer, trailer parking and on-property staff.

Aude Bauserman is wonderful !!!
