Help me design my barn!

I did say that I may bring them in their stalls to give them a little grain with their supplements so maybe that’s what you read! During the summer, they will be out grazing (we will have 100+ acres of pasture). I plan on feeding round bales in the winter as that is what I am used to. Might feed hay in the barn when it gets really nasty but it won’t be very often.

All-in-all, they are not going to spend much time in their stalls at all.

staircase - maybe there is some small “mini” staircase design we can come up with. It’s worth keeping in mind!

I considered putting a human door from the hay area to the trailer area - just wasn’t sure if I want to take away from the hay storage to put a door in. Keeping it in mind though.

Both of my horses are used to automatic waterers, or drinking water “naturally” in the pasture, or from a tub filled from a hose - - They’ve been exposed to it all!!

I plan on doing 2 waterers so if one breaks or freezes I have a backup. Or if there is a bossy horse (someday), there is more than one spot to get water. Plus, there is a dam in what will be the south pasture.

Hmm, I really don’t understand your question on the fences and fields … I haven’t fully come up with my design yet, but there will be 4 to 5 pastures that I will rotate the horses into, with one of them good for making hay. Again, our piece of land is 130 acres.

Water heater for the wash rack will go just on the other side of the wall in the tack room. I don’t think I’ll need two faucets because I am going to do a frost free hydrant in the barn too, along with ones outside. Those are quick for filling buckets and tubs.

GREAT THOUGHTS! These are the types of design things I am thinking about.

As far as the tack room, that’s what I had pictured if I put my “feed room” in the tack room. Might be a good set up because I want some cabinets anyway in my tack room for things like horse shampoo, extra fly spray, show grooming botttles, wound ointment, etc, and stuff like that where you might not use it every day but want it handy.

As far as the aisle width, I do not cross tie my horses in the aisle. They just get tied “normal” to a post. Not a fan of cross tying at all.

This is what I am talking about with the water-ers:

Ours didn’t have the board on the top, but it served 2 fields like this

That way you don’t have to put in totally as many drinkers, save some money but each field can still get 2 drinkers. That is if you ill have shared fence lines though.

I wonder if one of the attack stair cases would be worth thinking about? The pull down kind.

My horses also loved playing in the streams/rivers in their field (75+ acre fields!). Biggest heart attack I ever had was when my boy was laying in the river on a hot day, and wouldn’t get up- I thought he was collicing, had a broken leg, something terrible. But nah, just cooling off… But I digressed!

Ah, yes, I am going to put the waterers on the fence line like the picture depicts. Personally, I don’t think I’ve ever even seen a single sided waterer. I’m sure they are available but everyone does the double ones around here so it serves two corrals at once.

I won’t need to, but a waterer could potentially serve FOUR corrals, if you have all 4 corners of the corrals come together over the waterer.
