There’s no excuse for loose dogs being allowed to menace horses or humans. Can’t fault the OP for being upset.
Oh goody. We have another unenlightened visitor from that special dimension…Kissmyassius.
@MBurson , Whoever booked your tour of our humble realm should have given you a copy of this book, for assimilation purposes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/How_to…fluence_People
And then explained what we all likes to call the ‘Golden Rule’.
Y’all come back when you’re done readin’, ya hear. :encouragement:
Wait, can you please quote your source for your first sentence (bolded by me)? I don’t read any posts that say anyone supports someone turning around and trying to hit the OP.
???
Wow - if you came on to your neighbors the same way you started here, I can see why you are having trouble.
That being said, I am sorry for what you are going through but you may have to do some serious backpedalling here. Good luck.
By ignoring the extreme behavior in response for her initial attitude people are supporting this harassment in some way. Nobody has sounded alarmed that her behavior toward the owners of loose dogs is due to horses being bitten already and most are suggesting that she’s the one who needs to go out and bake some cookies for people who are trying to run her off the road.
People here are busier making sure the city girl learns her lesson about insulting the locals.
Even if she’s an unenlightened city girl who hasn’t learned the art of asking her new country neighbors to not put her life in danger she hasn’t earned the retaliation.
I mean really, if someone’s loose dog attacks and bites your horse are you going to bring them cookies and gently explain how it’s dangerous for the dog? Normal people know that driving by someone riding and laying on their horn can cause a reaction, normal people know that throwing things at horses in pastures is wrong, people looking for sport honk anyway and diplomacy isn’t going to help and no amount of “city” attitude on the part of the OP warrants it.
Yes, the OP did sound pretty snotty in her OP but that isn’t an excuse for the behavior.
I don’t think anyone is going to hit the OP with a car, nor do I think she’ll be attacked by dogs because dude, this is a complete fiction.
If I thought it was true I would have followed Mondos lead and offered an insightful response. As is, the story has a lot of inconsistencies that are consistent with complete and utter BS. OP says she called the cops and then didn’t call the cop within the same paragraph. Sounds like someone working on a YA novel.
I think OP is justified in her concerns. I believe that all of us on here work hard to maintain the health and safety of our horses. WHY she chose to move to this atrocious place from a nice place is beyond me. WHY she rides on the road way is beyond me. I recently shut down my 40+ boarding barn and moved to a small barn owned by a friend (family death, etc) and similar things were going on…smoking everywhere, folks in barn that had absolutely no business in the barn, 4-wheeler in pasture…etc (i do not ride on the road)…that lasted about a week. I was DIRECT and to the point as to what had to stop. Got some dirty looks, etc but I am known to be a total batshit crazy bitch…only as a last resort…PLUS the property owner likes having someone in there that will actually pay their board…
The wild exaggeration in the title of the post leads me to believe there is a likely a similar amount of exaggeration in the body of the post.
It’s amazing that the “little country” barn managed to stay in business and all its other boarders and horses survive before OP got there to tell them how to run the place!
OP, I’m sorry you are being treated this way in your neighborhood. I agree with those who have suggested you return to your previous barn. Pay more board and quit buying tack you don’t need. (Boots aren’t tack, BTW. And “y’all” isn’t spelled “ya’ll.”)
I moved from glorious boarding to the rural south. I keep my horses at home, but if I want to trail ride I either need to haul out or ride the roads. Before I did that I opened my eyes and surveyed the route. I noticed that many people just let their dogs roam. It’s a rural area, it’s what they do, what they’ve always done. I also took note that on one road I’d be on, people drive very fast despite the 35 mph signs. I also noted that there were not many horses in the area, and the ones that did ride out had horses who did not mind traffic in the least. In other words, most drivers have NO idea of what horses can do. Zero.
Yes, it’s irritating as hell to be chased by dogs. I taught my horse to turn and face them, or even go after them. You’d be surprised at how many lunatic sounding dogs turn tail when their prey doesn’t run but turns into predator!
Yes, crazy drivers are scary. I make sure that I only ride on days with no wind so that I can hear cars coming and get well to the side or up a side road or driveway. I don’t ride where there are no escapes. When people make the slightest effort to slow down or move over they get a cheery wave and a big grin. I wave at the people I see in their yards.
I’M the newcomer. Most of my neighbors have lived in the area all their lives. I may not agree with what they do, but since I don’t want them telling me that I’m mean to fence my dogs and cats in and not let them roam, I’m not going to lecture them on how they keep animals or drive.
There are some damned scary people around here. There are also some really lovely folk who look just like the scary ones. I don’t judge, I keep myself TO myself as much as possible, and take people as I find them.
OP, you might try a looser set of judgey pants, and to teach your horses to deal with the real world.
Well said.
G.
The problem is the OP’s neighbors aren’t here asking for advice, so we can’t advise them (like, “don’t let your dogs loose” and “drive slowly around horses otherwise someone is going to get killed”).
And the OP didn’t ask if loose dogs or driving too close was dangerous, they asked if there was anything they can do before they get hurt. And sadly the answer is when you’ve gotten a whole neighborhood annoyed with you it can be very difficult (impossible) to recover. Next time try approaching more slowly with a lump of sugar in your hand and the halter hidden behind your back.
B-b-but, the neighborhood already knows her, I presume, and vice versa. Remember that she said her new barn is walking distance from her home. Given the tone of the OP (and extending the benefit of the doubt that this whole thing is not pure troll-fiction), I doubt this is her first run-in with these folks.
You might be a Zombie Red Neck if…
You crave southern fried brains?
You shoot yourself in the foot by accident…then eat the pieces?
I still haven’t figured out how the OP’s neighbors are zombies…
Nay, Nobody agrees with her neighbors’ behaviors. However, for any advice to be meaningful, OP needs to have a major 180 degree attitude adjustment. It is also curious that OP left her fancy barn to go to a “less” drama barn, when the first thing she did was having pissing contests with various neighbors. Coupled with her attitudes on this forum, where she came to ask advice, I see repetition of behaviors. Drop a chaos lover in a peaceful environment, and that environment will deteriorate to be chaotic. Hardly any secret.
I can definitely say that bullets and fires in the woods and needles/syringes in the pasture and vehicles trying to run me down on the road would be complete dealbreakers for me. Big LOL @ “I don’t like them and they don’t like me.” I see nothing immoral or illegal wrong with that. Gaslighting is what it’s called when you know something’s definitely out of whack but people try to convince you it’s all in your head. You seem to be keeping a good grip on the actual reality. Some people are just disruptive trash that nobody would miss if they suddenly disappeared, but it’s become politically incorrect to not put up with other people’s sh*t. I firmly believe there is nothing immoral in declaring war, provided one is prepared to fight to win. >;-D Small town and rural America just ain’t the nice safe, wholesome, pleasant, and prosperous whitebread places that they used to be. Joke 'em.
Nobody said anything about it being all in her head. It was pointed out that there might have been a better way than the nuclear option first time out.
Now that the fat’s in the fire though she’s absolutely right to leave. Make everyone happier.
I did. Or to be more clear, I said the entire scenario is made up.
