I have a friend who lost a 13-year-old Doberman cross to this; the dog seemed perfectly healthy and then bled out.
I’m not sure if it was exactly this, but I lost my 14 year old JRT a few years ago to this or something similar. She was older, deaf, but other than that seemed fine. Went to a horse trial to volunteer with her in the morning, we hung out in the shade under a tree while I jump judged. She acted a bit less lively by mid day but I put it down to the heat. By the end, when I went to get her out of the crate to take her home she collapsed. Several small animal vets there they told me to rush her to the emergency care, I did, and basically had to decide and let her go. I couldn’t believe the difference between morning and the end.
We lost my 11.5 year old yellow lab to this cancer this fall.
Came home from work and she was in shock, took her to vet and did the emergency surgery. Upon biopsy, vet gave her 6-8 weeks. Nearly exactly 8 weeks later we noticed an active dog with a very distended belly, and they opened her up again. We euth’d her on the table. heartbreaking.
Yes my old kitty Reno died from it. We knew he had something like that because of rapid weight loss and tests coming back normal. But one Sat. he was def. “down” and I was going to bring him in on Mon. but he perked up a bit. Then that night he stretched out and I could see the blood underneath the skin. He’d been off on Sat. because he probably had started to bleed. I felt horrible for not noticing the bleeding sooner. My sister also lost her golden to it. Luckily they didn’t suffer long drawn out illnesses. They felt pretty good until the very end.
We lost our dear (wonderful, loyal, dumb-as-the-day-is-long) wire fox terrier Charlie to hemangiosarcoma back in 2005. He’d been diagnosed with lupus as a 3 year old, and was then on high-dosage prednisone for over a year.
He had a few good years in there after we knocked back the lupus, but he started getting a little slower when he was about 7. Then the hemangiosarcoma just hit him one night when he laid down on my feet and looked up at me. Took him to the clinic, they opened him up to look for the bleeding, and apparently there was cancer everywhere. We did not wake him up from surgery.
After struggling to diagnose and then treat the lupus, it was heartbreaking to lose him so quickly. We lost his mom to kidney failure two years later, and have not been able to bring ourselves to get more fox terriers since then.
