He's Forrest! New horse thread

Great name!

I had a gelding who came running and whinnying when I called him, the one and only time he escaped from his paddock. He was nowhere to be seen, so I was very happy that I didn’t have search the woods or the dirt roads.

He was the same horse that when I went off him out hacking (twice in 18 years) would stay with me and wait for me to mount back up. I think he was insecure out in the world on his own.

Awaiting more photos of your Forrest when you have time. :slightly_smiling_face:

Forrest was my Clydesdale’s name, too. He was the most fun and versatile horse I’ve owned. I hope you have as much fun with your Forrest as I did with mine!

I mean, he is 100% autumn court with that coloring, but I do think that Forrest fits him better than Lucien. I just finished ACOTAR and am working on finishing Crescent City book 2 just in time for the release of book 3. After I finish that one I guess it is time to go on to ToG!

I’m on the last book of TOG! You have to slog through the first three IMO (read Assassin’s Blade either 3rd or last, IIWM) but it’s gets really good. Do the tandem read if you can of EOS and TOD, or be ready to rage read at mach 10

Forrest fits him well - despite me trying ALL the names

Thats what I hear, since ToG was her first series, so the writing is not as good/ leads more juvenile in the first few books right? Since it happens in a separate ‘universe’ I figure I can start on that series later.

Sorry- not trying to de-rail the tread on this seriously cute OTTB. I hope you post lots of updates on this boy.

It reads like high schooler self insert fiction at first - it was written when she was in high school and published soon after. But it improves DRAMATICALLY. ACOTAR is still my favorite (I haven’t read CC) but we shall see if my tune changes when I finish TOG.
(Caveat: that English degree I have makes me INSANELY CRITICAL of writing and I have strong opinions. Plenty of people I know weren’t bothered at all by the first few books!)

Here’s some (scruffy, poultice-y, dusty) pics, as promised! Pardon the bad lighting, it’s too cold to take my gloves off for long and the mini escaped her 5 year old handler right as I took these

Forrest is going out in the round pen with friends on all sides during the day and is LOVING it

He’s inside at night because I don’t trust the round pen and the dry lot is rock hard so I feel bad for his feet. He gets tons of hay in various containers and seems to like to lay down and nap in the wee hours of the morning.

He may not be the best built horse, but he’s still got that drawn up, no neck racey look to him. He really looks like an Appendix to me with his big ole booty.

Someone put a lot of work into this horse at some point. He is unperturbed by screaming children climbing on his stall door, stands in the cross ties like a gentleman, leads pretty well (we need to work on placement but all things considered I’ve seen worse), and seems to be willing to let me throw blankets at him and do whatever I need in his stall or the aisle.

We went on a little field trip out the gate and down the side of the pasture. Maybe 50’ from the barn but he’s not been over there at all yet. He was good, just a little looky, but I wanted to get a feel for how he is in strange places.

Can you show us a full body conformation shot? We need a good “ before” reference before you get too far into this.

I love his sweet looking face. He also has very cute ears (not quite pony ears but sorta?). Can’t wait to see how those feet look Friday!

We have some pics! He’s eating hay but I couldn’t have stood him up much better on my own except for his head and neck.

Click for full size, since mobile wants to cut his head off lol

I’m hoping he wants to be a low level hunter. I’d be happy to get him going in the 2’6" and see what happens.

He’ll stand himself up once he gets a few months of remedial trimming on those clown shoes. His dogs have got to be barking. Lovely kind guy–so glad you have him.

Can’t wait to see him in 60 days. He’s going to be stunning.

I hope so. Like I said, he’s no textbook example of a well built horse, but I think he could be quite handsome. It helps that he’s dang cute and seems to want to participate!

That can count for a LOT!

Maybe not now but…a “virtual string test”- distance from ergot to elbow roughly equal to distance from elbow to withers- hints that he’s not done growing. Looks like an inch or two waiting to emerge.

Really not seeing anything too bad at all here, he does have that racehorse neck but that often goes away with added pounds and correct muscle development. Also could be shifting his weight back to take weight off his front feet. He’ll have a better balanced stance once he can stand and move squarely and uses calories to physically develop instead of run further faster. Suspect he’s not going to be weedy or gangly in 6 months.

Good luck with the farrier…and you know we want to see before and after pics.
