Hey cow folks! Bottle calf question: whole milk or milk replacer?

I tasted milk replacer years ago and as I recall it had a slightly metallic taste, no where near as good as it smelled. From the smell, I was expecting it to be sweet but not so much.

It was like coffee to me, smells so much better than it tastes, lol!

I need to see pictures of your new baby, OP! I love calves, taking care of them was my favorite part if my job(except for the bucket training, lol)!

You made me curious (I admit I have no use for Milk Replacer).
I went to Tractor Supply’s website and did a search for Milk Replacer.
The Dumor brand was milk based.
Purina (the one product I looked at) was mainly milk with some soy.
Two other brands (forgot what they were) were both milk.

Thank you @PintoPony for saving me the taste!

I agree when I worked on a dairy I would much rather be on calf duty than in the parlor. But when one of them is sucking on its own tail, the hutch, your arm
then you stick a bottle in its mouth and it doesn’t suck, so frustrating!

And don’t forget pizzle sucking, gross, but makes you feel bad for the little guys too.

I use milk replacer and have had great success, there is a lot more fat content than whole milk, I am currently bottle feeding a Highland bull calf and he is thriving on milk replacer.
