High Country Plastics Slow Feeder Saver

Are there any safety issues with the webbed insert? Can a hoof fit through? Does it slide out easier if a horse is crafty?
Seems the metal grate might be safer. Let me know, I need to buy and thanks!

The openings are too small for a average horse to fit their hoof, but if you have mini’s you might need to worry about it.
It’s easy for a person to get it out, but a horse would have to be very talented. I think it’s unlikely.

Good luck getting one! I still haven’t gotten mine.

One of my horses actually got their shoe caught on the metal grate and pulled it out, bending it nearly in half.

I used the webbed insert now, and haven’t had any issues.

Oh yes, that is a problem with these and the other net type ones too. I don’t like using them with any shod horses

I wouldn’t use this feeder with a shod horse. Also, metal grates are notorious for causing dental issues, so that’s something to consider.

A hoof could fit through the webbing but if you are concerned, it seems feasible to replace the webbing with hay net material, unless you’re worried also about shoes. A commercial sewing company that works with canvas, awning, etc. would probably be able to sew the hay net to the frame, or you could improvise.

FWIW I’ve used these with 3 different shod horses and not had any issues with hooves getting caught. For many years.
Knock wood.
