Highly Palatable Bagged Feed

My old man (aka Mr. Pickypants) refused to eat Ultium when I tried. I loved him to
pieces but soooo picky.

Picked up a bag of TC Senior and the response yesterday was “meh” but we will see! They have a whole bag to try and decide if they like it. I’ve added 1cup to each meal but can probably add more if needed.

Haven’t you read the many threads on here where this is usually the response after they eat it for a while?

I think I would try anything but TC feeds :innocent:

I’ve read a LOT of threads over many years, and am involved in several large FB groups, and can’t say that the USUAL response to TC feeds is that horses stop eating it. Yes, some do, I have one. I also had one who happily ate every speck of 10-12lb a day for several years. I know a ton of people who have fed TC sr/gold/complete/perform for years and years without anyone turning up noses. I know a lot of people who use TC Sr as an appetite enhancer for small meals of ration balancers that are “cardboard” in taste.

I’m not sure which threads you’ve been reading.

Edited for spelling

I have not read anything of the sort and am not sure what you mean by when they’ve been on it for a while - they’ve been on it exactly one day, which I don’t think anyone would consider a while. Look at all of the replies on this thread that suggest TC Senior is something most horses like.

Well here they are. Mine hated it. They refused to eat it

Ground fenugreek plus some oil helped get my horse back on track eating this summer after he wanted to go on a forage only hunger strike.

OP, is Coolstance a mandatory part of their feeding program? I ask because I’ve read that a lot of horses don’t find it very palatable. Could you reduce the amount fed or replace it entirely with something else? Is it for fat/weight? Could oil be used instead? Or a flax-based supplement like Omega Horseshine? Or maybe the granular CocoSoya product? Just trying to think of options that might be more palatable than Coolstance if that is part of the issue.

Seriously, sprinkle a handful of Calf-Manna in there. I’ve never met a horse that didn’t go bonkers for the stuff. It’s high NSC (if that matters), but it’s also been around forever and has earned its reputation for putting weight/condition on horses and keeping it there plus encouraging them to eat because of the irresistible flavor.

I only read on here and I have read it often in many threads about feed/ feeding etc…
It is usually the people who’s horses started refusing it who post. No matter it seems to be a factor when feeding TC that it is a greater possibility of it happening. I’d rather not experience that.

Well, it’s not really a surprise that the senior feed lowest in NSC isn’t the most appealing. TC Senior looks great to humans, but we don’t eat grain. My senior mare is “meh” about it; SafeChoice Senior is a higher NSC and is 100% preferred over TC Senior. (Again, not surprising, right? - 20% v. 13% NSC I think?)

My dogs also don’t like the low protein or low calorie feeds.

They aren’t much different than we are. How many plain rice cakes would you eat before enough was enough??

A week ish later they are both cleaning bowls, however one has turned into a raging b!tch to the other (previously they would groom each other, take naps together, etc) chasing her, biting her, and threatening to kick even though the other is 20+ft away. I’m pulling the TCS for her tomorrow as that’s the only thing that changed. Fingers crossed that does the trick.

Eek! I wonder if it’s the soy in the TC Sr?

That’s my thought/ hope (as it would be an easy fix).

Not this thread. There are plenty of replies on other feed threads about people’s horses turning up their nose at TC feeds after being on it a while.

That was my point in posting that. Your horses may eat it forever without an issue. Not everyone is so lucky and that is something to think about when trying a new feed.

Your horse 's personality change is sadly something that can happen on any brand feed. You never know until you feed it.

Definitely don’t recommend putting Prascend in the feed as it’s extremely bitter …what works well for mine is putting it inside a German Horse Muffin treat
