Hookworm in my new dog. Questions

Your vet is absolutely right for wanting to do a fecal on your dogs. Canine hookworm resistance is a massive emerging issue and so it’s important to make sure that the Simparica Trio is actually working. If it is, then there’s no reason to give them another drug. It’s not a cash grab.

You’ll want to avoid being barefoot, cover any cuts/sores, and don’t roll around in that grass for awhile. You can, in fact, get canine hookworm. It’s fairly common in dog parks as well, so that’s fun.

Yes, I’ve had to do this protocol before; resistant hookworms are becoming a thing. It sucks! Best of luck to you and your doggo.

To echo what @Pico_Banana said, there are drug resistant hookworms out there and they’re really hard to get rid of. They’re especially present in the greyhound world, dog show world and animal shelters.

When we adopted my whippet last year, she tested positive for hookworms and our vet had us do the same drug resistant protocol as Pico mentioned. Luckily, we don’t have any other pets and we pick up our dog’s poop immediately, so we didn’t have to repeat it and she re-tested clear.

But for the OP, I would be prepared to accept the vet’s guidance on this one. It sounds like they’re not trying to nickel and dime you, merely trying to effectively address a difficult, drug-resistant parasite.
