HORRIBLE Breath--help me think through some ideas.

Thanks for the ideas everyone.

I hate the smell of cow hooves too, I think they smell like vomit but this smell is still different. DEFINITELY metallic.

And agreed on the “smell it when he yawns” thing–he just licked his lips next to me and I caught a whiff.

I’m goign to explore the ulcer idea. Had tapeworms and the works when I found him but his gut is clean now. Maybe probiotics would help…I might try the yogurt thing, I don’t think any of my crew would object to that.

I have a toothbrush and paste and (another bad mom comment) they only get done about once a month or so–but HIM I do once or twice a week, although it never helps the breath stench.

My little 10 mo.old JRT’s breath is just kinda metallic- she’s not a poo nosher, thank goodness, and no poofing, either. She eats what the other 5 eat-BB Wilderness Salmon dry and a bit of Merrick canned at night plus salmon oil, and veggies. I’m a mean mom, too-not many treatskies except nylabones, marrow bones, and antlers. What’s strange is that my dear departed heart Jack had the same breath-kinda unpleasant since she sleeps with us.

Let us know if you find anything on the ulcer idea, irked, and I will do the same. That is interesting.

i had a lab many years ago who smelled BAD in the same way…i had to spray perfume when she came inot the bedroom at night…it was so rank, it would wake me…

THYROID…that was her particular problem…don’t recall which direction is was skewed, but those tiny thyroid pills did the trick…
now, i know it cannot be the answer to ALL the bad breathed doggies, but it just might be the answer for one or two…

My cat with stomach problems, pancreatitis, has very bad breath. You can tell it’s a medical problem, not just bad breath but unhealthy breath.

Another thing to chekc is the inner ear. I can’t tell you how many dogs with ‘bad breath’ have come in and it be caused by a deep ear infection. ick
