Horse Color Preference

I like a nice bay. Every time I see “white” anywhere on a horse all I can picture is spending hours trying to keep it clean. Plus some of the “fancier” colors tend to have poor temperament/ conformation because some breeders focus too much on the color and not on the important parts of the horse.

I like bays and all the bay-based dilutes. Buckskin, bay dun, amber champagne = LOVE IT. I hate the look of red horses (sorry, just do!) and dislike all the red-based colors. Black, I’m meh on. I do love the look of black silver, but I’ve known so many whose manes and tails went dark and icky-looking with age that I would never pay the premium price a nice-looking young one goes for. Grey, eh, something else will probably kill it before the melanoma does. I won’t pass one up if it’s otherwise suitable.

And of course everything needs to be pinto! I have 5 of them, I’m slightly fond.

I just realized the other day, while staring at my horses in the pasture, that I no longer own any chestnuts. There was sea of bay. It has taken me a year to realize this. I lost my last chestnut mare to acorn poisoning last year. And I now have two pinto DWB’s who are BAY and white. I don’t actually love chestnuts, but I have known some great ones. I remember from my Pony Club Mom era, watching the chestnuts gleam brightly in the distant X-county fields. You could always find them whereas the bays tend to blend in the treed areas.

2 palominos here. I didn’t buy them for their color but that’s what everyone thinks when you own palominos. Their saving grace is that pee stains don’t show.

I love a bay Paint. And a liver chestnut with flaxen mane and tail. I just really like spots on any color, actually. But sorrel overos are really common and can be a little boring. That said, I’ve got one of those, too.

I think my favorite color is that rare black horse that is blue-black, non-fading. They always look oiled they can be so shiny. I dont own one, in fact my own black horse I registered as bay because I just could not see he was truly black… but I stop and look at one when I see it!

I’ve always loved blacks, but a true black is hard to find. But there’s no bad color for a good horse!

A few years ago, I wanted a nice conservative colored hunter and had just about decided to buy a nice bay with no markings, when somebody said I should go look at this Appaloosa. Now an Appy was the last thing I wanted then, but he was big (17 hands). But omigod, spots all over, not even a conservative bay or chestnut with a blanket! But when I rode him he fit like a glove and he turned out to be my horse of a lifetime–and I learned to love the spots.

Last time I was looking for a horse, it was going to be anything but a paint, and definitely not blue eyes. Guess what I have now–a bay overo pinto (Clydesdale x Paint cross) with a big bald face & 2 blue eyes. And he’s my handsome boy & I love him, even his white eyelashes.

I’m trying hard not to say anything bad about albinos or cremellos, or that’s what the Horse Fairy will land me with next.

I’ve owned or ridden almost every color, except all these colors that have arisen from our ability to sort out genetics, i.e. smoky black. While I definitely defer to the idea that a good horse is not a bad color, chestnut has always been my least favorite color. And I have no reason for that feeling other than color as when I developed the preference I had had no “bad” experiences with chestnuts.

That said, I have owned a roaning chestnut Appy, a solid chestnut, and, now, a chestnut tobiano Paint. I can’t seem to avoid it. LOL.

My favorites are the bays and buckskins. I love a dark bay, not a red bay, that’s light enough to highlight the contrast with the black points. No white on the legs, and a little white on the face–a star, or a strip/thin blaze.

I have a gray. Didn’t want one because of the cleaning nightmares. I was so stupid when I bought him - he was OK because he was a “very dark gray.” LOL. Not any more, madame. And I did not know about the melanoma issue when I bought him, either. Knock on wood, he’s 10 and nothing.

My favorite color is grey. Yes they are hard to keep clean and melanomas suck, but I cant help it, they are my favorite. Bays and blacks are my second favorite. But I will buy a good horse regardless of color.

I’m a grey all the way gal. I’m a sucker for a grey. I also love Palominos. I never liked chestnuts but I find myself attracted to chestnuts with white stockings. Not red red chestnuts though. I could deal with a bay, but a pale bay with some white on the face. I don’t like Apps, Paints or pintos. Not really into “colored” horses. I have a bias when it comes to colors. It could be these bestest horse in the world, but if it’s the wrong color, I wouldn’t look twice.

I’m a firm believer in whatever the saying is about a good horse never being a bad color.

That being said, I really dislike fleabitten greys and palominos. I’m sorry if you are the proud owner of one (or more!), I mean no insult…I just really don’t like either of those.

A regular dappled grey is beautiful to me, but past the initial reaction what I see when I look at them is the double whammy of daily upkeep to look less like something the cat drug in, and the fear of melanomas down the road.

I don’t think I have a favorite color, but I do love a silvery tail

Appaloosas! Especially snowcaps or blankets with peacock spots - and lightning marks! My dressage trainer thinks I am nuts, but I know there are some Appys out there doing dressage well.

Not really because of superstitions - there are just a number of colors I do not enjoy, and wouldn’t really consider.

Cremellos, other double dilutes, bald faces - or any other horse with a lot of pink skin on the face - especially around the eyes (I really do not like pink around the eyes).

Greys - the whole melanoma thing, and what a PTA they are to keep clean.

Despite enjoying appaloosas, I think certain varnish roans are really unattractive, and would avoid owning one.

The list of colors I like is LONG! Dark browns with dapples, bays of all different shades, buckskins, black, liver and bright chestnuts, tobiano paints (with minimal white), leopard and blanket appaloosas…

If you do not already know about grey horses, look up old threads. You do not want grey no matter how popular they are![/QUOTE]

Aside from the standardbreds ,I’ve had nothing but greys, live in the desert, and over 30 years have had 2 melanomas, the biggest of which was the size of a pea.

I’ve known three grey arabians, all of whom were related, to have mega issues but…

Seriously people?

I went searching for a chestnut last year. Something that matched the color of the mud here. I love my dark bay/black horse but trying to get every last spec of dust out of his coat at 5am in the dark and cold was getting old. Black shows EVERYTHING. So now I have a muddy-day horse

I love a bay with lots of white.

That being said, after a lifetime of horses and ponies that all either had high whites or been greys or paints, I adore my chestnut mare with solid legs. She’s the easiest horse I’ve ever gotten to show. No more quick silver and frantic scrubbing. And as a bonus, the footing in our indoor is pretty much the same color as she is so while everyone else’s horses are stained pink, mine looks just fine.

Love bays. My boys is a line-backed golden bay. My other guy is black going gray. His face is graying out, making him look old, and he’s only four! My mare is black, but I’d bet she carries cream- she such a “blonde”! Possible, too, as dam was buckskin.

Don’t like chestnuts/sorrels at all. Too plain to me. I do love a dark liver chestnut with the flaxen mane and tail…

Really don’t like appies. The only horses who have deliberately tried to hurt me were apps…

I never wanted a gray horse, because they do turn white with age. What was my first horse? Gray. He never did go pure white, he got more and more flea bitten with age.

A nice deep bay with tall black legs.

My current boy has tall blacks, four stockings, ermine spots, and a star, stripe and snip. He’s a hunk.

My stay away from color is grey. I had a friend who had a grey and he almost bled to death from melanomas. The other reason I would stay away from greys is that I live ( and board in the land of red clay). I have had several red bays, a bay and white app, a black and white app and two chestnuts. One with minimal chrome(a small star) and one with 4 white socks, a star, stripe and snip. The chestnuts are my favorite so far.
