My one fly whisk that I use every day I have had forever. A friend gave it to me as a gift. I have another one that I bought a couple of years ago that is a little fancier. If I remember correctly, I paid about $45 for it. Nice long handle, and long thick hair.
I ordered one through my local tack store several years ago. When I went to pick it up, the gals working there had no clue what it was. I had to explain how awesome fly whisks are for dislodging deer flies and horseflies - especially when one is riding a rat-tailed appy.
We ride in South and Central Florida and I wouldn’t want to ride without my whisk. It’s great for flies and mosquitos but my main use is for to clear spiders and their webs from the trails. We have these giant banana spiders that drape their super heavy and sticky webs right across the trail at rider face height…if you ride into them and get the spider on you it can be a daunting few moments until the spider leaps off. I’ve had one hang off my visor, rappel down to my lip, hang there a second, then proceed to descend from there…I get the heebeegeebees thinking about it!
Hmm, pondering just cutting off a chunk of my horse’s insanely thick tail and duct taping it to a crop. That should work.
I saw a neat home made sheath/scabbard for a H.H. fly whisk. They made it out of a piece of PVC. Wish I had a picture.

I have an awesome fly whisk that I got from Virginia Whip Works! I use it whenever I ride and it really keeps the flies off my boy Frisco. This fly whisk is custom so it is made with my horse’s hair (I sent it in and they put it custom in the whisk for me) and it has his name carved into the handle! I love it and it was a very good price for me, since I wasn’t looking to spend way too much. Their website is http://virginiawhipworks.com in case you or anyone else is interested. Hope this helps!:)[/QUOTE]
$150 for a fly wisk!
LOL, beautiful, but I will continue to use my tree branch.
I found a super nice older antique-y one on ebay-very reasonable price-love it and use it whenever the horseflies or gnats are especially bad. My horse seemed to understand right away what it was for.
You just gotta be careful you don’t “flick” it too quickly around their eyes, don’t want to get too close.
I too, attach mine to the D. Actually, I have a little stuff sack for it when I’m not using it so the horsehair can be brought up around the stick to keep it all smooth and together.
