Horse I gave to a friend being starved...advice please

Ok despite being exhausted I had to check in with an update for everyone who gave me their advice. The mare is definitely thin. You can see a few ribs and she has very little muscle…however, she is not in a state that animal control would look twice at (although its painful for me to see…she has always been sleek, shiny, and butterball fat). She had rubbed all her skin off of her neck and chest and face, but I saw new hair growth, she told me she’s been treating it 3x a week. I think what shocked the people who saw her was the top of her hips in the middle. She has an SI injury that I had diagnosed and spent thousands on trying to get that diagnosis. At the time it was a small bump that looked like a mild hunters bump. It is now sticking up at least 2 inches…and it seems hard qnd calcified. She has muscle wastage mostly in the hind end…she appears “tucked up” and the muscle is just gone over her top line and hindquarters. She said she has had a chiropractor out, who gave her some exercises to do with her on the ground of course, to try and get her to use her hind end properly. However, she told her she needs weight before she does anything with her… I think pain has made her stand more camped out, and it has gotten insanely worse in just these 4 months. I can see where someone would have seen that and immediately thought protruding bones/starvation.

I started by asking her if she had tried × grain, because she looked super thin and she needs something she’s not getting. She said she has only been feeding her coastal hay, alfalfa cubes, and beet pulp. No grain. No vitamins/minerals. Herein I think lies the problem. So we discussed her different options, good things that would help support a good quality grain and give her an extra boost. I told her frankly the mare needs to gain weight, and discussed her having the vet out, which she seemed receptive to as well. I am thinking the vet can reinforce good sound nutrition with her. I also suggested the vet could give her a shot for her allergies to help clear her up even quicker.

The mare’s feet had just recently been trimmed, they were not overgrown. She had mentioned having issues with bugs and is into all natural fly spray, and I told her sometimes the risk of spraying chemicals onto your horse is needed for the comfort of your horse, and they will be JUST FINE. When she pulled her out of the stall she grabbed the fly spray by her stall door and lo and behold…it was the one I had recommended to her a few weeks ago. So, she did take that advice to heart.

I kept repeating the mare was not getting what she needed, and she kept admitting she knew she was in bad shape and explained all the steps she has been taking to get her into a better condition. So I think there’s hope. I gave her some money and told her to go buy the mare food. Whatever she needed, get her started. She wouldn’t take it but I gave it back to her and told her to take it and make sure it went towards the mare. She promised she would go in the morning. I made plans to go back out this weekend with some better shampoo I have that I think will soothe that irritation and will help bathe her. I’m going to be like a hawk and be over there every chance I get

Everything stayed actually relatively comfortable, I gave advice in a friendly way, she received such advice and we came up with some solutions that will help. But I am going to make sure I see action, and results. All in all it went a LOT better than I thought it would go. I felt heard, she got the message. Mission accomplished. I will keep everyone up to date on any progress I see, and want to thank everyone for calming me the heck down and making me think so that I went in with a clear head and think we might just solve this whole thing together. I also told her when she needs more feed or anything for her, to please pm me and I would paypal her. Im thinking of getting her paypal anyways so I can at least send $50 bucks a paycheck, even if she doesn’t ask. I really can’t afford it right now with our impending move but it appears she needs help, and I want the mare to be happy and healthy. I’ll just eat Ramen twice a day for a bit hah!

Horses can lose weight very quickly due to pain. So it sounds like it is the pain and the lower calories.

You are a good egg, but do not bankrupt yourself over someone else’s horse.

I would LOVE someone to give me $50.00 a week for my horses.

Believe me it doesn’t happen.

I agree with this… I would just drop in and not let it be known someone has given you a heads up. Ask questions, offer help and let it be perfectly clear you will take her back.

I was in a situation similar to this about 4 years ago, only it wasn’t my horse, it was a horse I helped place and I felt responsible for him. I got a call from the BO that the individual he had been placed with hadn’t paid his board in over 4 months. I was also very angry with the BO who I’ve known for years and have been friends with as she was feeding him just enough to keep him from looking like a coat rack.

I went to the owners house and talked to her. I told her if she gave him to me that I would make sure he was taken care of. I wanted him OUT of that situation… he had already been saved from auction once (OTTB) and didn’t deserve to be let down by people again. She agreed to let me take him and gave me his papers. He’s now retired in NC fat and happy with a very trusted friend who will keep him till the end of his days.

Hopefully she agrees to let you take her back… good luck and keep us updated.

Yay!! I hope all goes well and the situation improves… make sure she knows that if she runs into trouble again or has questions with care not to be afraid to reach out.

Hope to hear more positive updates

I know, I may end up with a divorce  . I really hope she takes action and she buys what she needs for her. I told her not to hesitate to reach out if she needs more help, I will figure it out on my end to do my best to help. I’m just glad I didn’t walk into what I thought I was walking into. Am I upset? Yes. Horrified? Yes. But she is a friend, and apparently she is having financial difficulties. I understand it is sometimes super hard to ask for help, but I told her not to hide it from me, so that we could ensure that maresy is in good condition and happy. I may have a bunch of kids, a full time job, horses and animals of my own, and an impending out of state move, but this mare was very important to me. If I have to help subsidize financially until she is healthy again, so be it. Don’t get me wrong, I can’t afford a trip to UF for her, or any expensive tests or anything, but I will make sure she at least gets the basic care she needs to be healthy. I won’t let myself go broke over doing it, but since I can help, I decided to for the mares sake.

Thanks again everyone for your advice!

I also want to add, I offered to take the mare back. I told her if she’s too much, or she is too financially strapped, I will gladly take her back. She did not want to entertain that. I did tell her she needed to get her sorted out because I am moving in January and I would feel horrible to leave her down here in this condition…so she knows I will find an extra slot to trailer the mare to TN come January if she needs her off of her bill. However, I expect full ownership of her if I do that, because I will be the one fully financially supporting her, paying to transport her across the country, etc. But the option is there as an out for her if she chooses to take it.

The hair loss sounds like sweet itch, and they can absolutely drop weight when they’re that uncomfortable and itchy from the gnats. It can be hard for people to get control of, and if it took effect slowly she may only just now be noticing how drastic the weight loss is. What is she treating the skin issue with? I’d get this mare a head-to-toe fly sheet or keep her inside with a high velocity fan during the day, including dusk and dawn when the gnats are the worst.
And lots of fly spray. Some can do without the fly sheet or fan if they’re fly sprayed AM and PM with an oil-based spray.

WLW, that mare is lucky you’re watching out for her. I have a soft spot for Mustangs, so I hope it all turns out okay. If you need anything, I’m not too far away. If you move away to TN and have to leave her behind, let me know if I can help.

Thank you, that means a lot to me. I’m stressing myself out so bad over the whole situation that I haven’t even been able to eat today. I just keep thinking…this mare is tucked at the back of her property and had the tree surveyor and the neighbor not contacted my friend and pieced together the pieces so that I could be informed, I would not have even been aware. It’s going to be even harder to leave to TN now, because I have no one to check on her. I will definitely keep your name tucked away so that if I need a contact down here once I move, I have one. Thank you!

Given the additional information, I worry that the owner either won’t follow through with your suggestions or that something more systemic is going on with the mare and she may need even more of an intervention.

Once you go to Tennessee, you may find that the new owner engages in “radio silence” in response to some of your queries. Is there any way that you could continue checking in occasionally even once you’ve moved?

You’re great, BTW, to care so much for this horse.

Thank you. I do have several people at the previous boarding barn that might be able to find an “in” with her. I already told my friend she’s going to have to start up with doTerra essential oils with the mare’s owner for me so that she can have an excuse to go over and take peeks at the mare when I’m gone  . I told her I would foot the bill if she would suck it up and listen to her talk about her oils so she could get eyes on the mare for me. She’s a very private person, which wasn’t an issue until now. She has very few people over, is very much an introvert, and prefers to stay to herself. And the way her property is situated…unless someone was messing around at the back of the property where they shouldn’t be, you definitely cannot see the mare from any road  . I did just send her a PM and asked her which feed she settled on for her (ahem…hint hint…have you bought it yet? Did you go this morning? Did a quality feed actually reach her mouth?). I haven’t heard back yet. I just hope she understands how hard that $100 was for me to come up with at this time, and actually uses it like she said she would. Or I might need bail money  .

Oh bother. I really hope the new owner makes good choices. Keep us updated.

What a tough situation. You’re a good egg, OP. I think that you’re handling this in the best way that you can. I hope things can turn around for the mare.

Well she wrote me back today to tell me she started her on the grain we discussed and she is top dressing it with Renew Gold. She bought more hay, and also a fly sheet and fly mask for the mare to try and help with the bugs. She also made a vet appointment for next week, so lets hope she keeps that. I told her it would be good to do a fecal, have her teeth checked, and do an overall exam so she can know if there is something going on, or if she just needs to put more quality calories in front of her. Cross your fingers!

Instead of sending/giving her money how about having the feed shipped directly from Chewy? This way you know the feed is at least getting there. It is is one less excuse for the owner that they didn’t have time/energy to go to the feed store or whatever.
