Horse or Pony?

So, you know how I said I was moving to Maryland in December. Nope… Make that Texas. San Antonio area. Ugh, now I have to start my location research all over again.

Anyway. I went and got my heart all set on getting a large (34-38 inch, or maybe oversized) mini and zipping around in a cute little cart when the full sibling to my late heart horse sort of came on the market. She is for sale, but not being actively advertised yet. She’s 14.3, and solidly built. She has no driving training, but the folks that have owned her since birth put an amazing solid foundation on their horses, and the mare has her sire’s laid back temperament. If she is half the horse her brother was she’ll be everything I am looking for.

I’m torn, I don’t know if I should just keep on keeping on with my pony goals, or jump on this chance to own a known quantity horse who can check all the riding boxes. Maybe I can find a place to have her trained to drive.

I might jump on it and see how the mare takes to driving. You said you have a couple years before relocating to Hawaii and you should know within a couple months if she is going to take well to driving. Good luck!

San Antonio is a great area!

the North Texas Whip is driving club that has been around for decades… surely some of those members know would be available in the San Antonio area also

all of our Morgans worked in harness, it just seems there was not not any breaking them to harness at all but put it on and they appeared to know what they were to do.

we had one who was 14.1 and a half inch so officially a pony but really appeared to be much larger. She was often challenged when entered in pony classes

The San Antonio area seems to be covered by HACA (Houston Area Carriage Associate) rather than the North Texas Whip. The vice president of the club reached out to me when I posted looking for information on one of the Texas facebook pages. She said she would love to help me get involved.

I did find a place about an hour and a half outside of San Antonio that offers driving lessons. The only catch, other than the distance, which seems far to my Hawaiian sensibilities, is that they mostly drive donkeys and mini mules and I’m worried that the adorable factor would be a little overwhelming. I’ll want to stick one in the back of my car and take it home with me, and since that is theoretically possible it is a big risk.

And they’re even more efficient to feed and hardy than a pony! A large standard or a mammoth donkey is perfectly ridable and mules, of course, come in all sizes and body types!
