Horse owner required to take out liability insurance policy and name barn owner as additionally insured party?

Asking your agent the questions you posed is not a bad idea. But adding, or being added, as an “additional named insured” is a very common practice in many circumstances.

I have two tenants that lease property from me. My company, Travelers, requires that both carry policies with a minimum value and both must name me as an “additional named insured” under their policy. This does not, in any way, excuse Travelers from defending me in the event that a claim is made but it does mean that Travelers may not be primarily liable for indemnity. In short, it’s a partial “shield” for Traveler’s interests given that they did not write the policy on the tenant and have little control over the tenant’s activities.

I understand in your circumstance, I was not aware that insurance companies can mandate tenants purchases renters and/ or liability insurance. I’ve always had renters insurance (to cover my personal property) but never was required to have such insurance. But then that was more years ago than I’d like to remember. Good information thanks G.

OOPS- when i first posted i thought you just meant ‘am i required to have liabity ins?’, which i am. But i never had to name the BO as anything…

Not exactly related - but when I was treasurer of our local dressage organization, we had about 6 schooling shows per year, each at a local barn. We were required to add each facility to our GMO liability insurance as named insured for the days we were there.

Thanks for the feedback. I’ve decided to hold off for now but I will keep this in mind if I decide to move and encounter a similar contract clause in the future.
