Horse prefers hay over pasture

Bahia is just not that tasty, especially towards the end of the summer. It’s what I have in my pastures here in SC. I find that in the early grass season the horses are all about getting out to graze, but by this time of year they are way less excited about grass. I also find that my horses require a bit more hay at the end of the summer, as they will lose a bit of condition on the late season pasture grass if I don’t watch them. I just think there is not much nutrition in the grass at the end of the year.

I feed hay year round, as my horses spend part of the day on a dry lot. I generally feed a Timothy blend, as the horses like it fine, but don’t LOVE it like they do orchard grass. If I have orchard grass they will stick around and eat every single blade, even if they have grass available for grazing. Northern hays are really expensive here, so I want them to have what they need but I like to stretch my hay out with grass as well.
