Horse refusing prascend

I gave mine in half a German muffin then gave the star mint as a chaser.

Eventually I was able to just drop it in his soaked grain. Worked for both of my horses. Prascend is very bitter tasting and I found things like carrots, apples, etc. don’t disguise the bad taste as well.

Thanks…I just searched fruit roll ups and found it. Sadly, it turns out it was a one and done w the roll ups. On to something else🤦‍♀️.

More horses than not are hard(er) to keep weight on until the PPID is controlled

Someone is lucky if they have a vet who’s versed enough in health horse nutrition to give suggestions. Most of those don’t know enough to suggest a diet for a metabolically compromised horse

For the OP - get some empty capsules in the size to fit the pill. No smell.

aaaaaaaaand I just saw this is an old thread LOL

Get some gelatin capsules and stick the pill in. It mask both the smell and taste. The only way the horse will taste the pill is if the capsule breaks when it is chewed. I give it with a treat. I use size 00.

I recently had to start prasend. My horse almost immediately starting refusing Fig Newton with the pill. Previously he was eating them fine. Now he still won’t eat fig newtons, but I am not having anything issue with him eating the pill. He is not a good candidate for syringing it into his mouth.

Was the prascend introduced slowly and gradually ? It’s recommended to start at 1/4 pill and increase by 1/4 every 4 days until target dose is reached ….it’s also recommended to give APF -an adaptogen to help with the Pergolide Veil which is a side effect of Prascend

I would start giving APF -syringe it orally by mouth for a few days then start gradually again with Prascend …give 1/4 pill in a German Horse Muffin treat -works like a charm for all of mine that take it …I’ve only had 1 old pony refuse it even after all the above steps …for him we switched to compounded Pergolide liquid from Wedgewood Pharmacy…you have to dose that orally.
