Horse Sales Sites

I was back and forth discussing horses with a local trainer who is not a total nobody and who does rated shows. She knew I was looking for a hunter. I told her I was looking for a hunter. It was clear that we were discussing hunters. She sent me one (not young/green) and described it up down and backwards-- how it was perfect perfect perfect. Except she ended her long description with “the one thing it doesn’t have is changes, does that make a difference for you?”

Goddamn it lady, you know it does! We’re both hunter people. You know goddamn well it does! :stuck_out_tongue:

To VFX111: Okay, I’ll play “Price the Horse,” with the caveat that I know nothing about mid-Atlantic pricing and will be answering in Pacific Northwest customary pricing terms. Second caveat: My prices reflect what I think reasonable sellers here would ask–not unreasonable, unrealistic sellers who pop up everywhere from time to time. And of course I’m generally off–sellers might ask 10% or even 20% more. And sellers do come down on their asking prices…

Horse #1: A little too tall, I’d worry a tiny bit about soundness. And how come no reliable lead changes at 9 yo? Factoring in that h/j world is crazy, maybe 10K. Beginner horse for a rider on a tight budget with modest goals, i.e. just getting in the ring?

Horse #2: Height doesn’t make me worry. Great flatwork, big plus. Again, 8 yo and iffy changes–how come? Would want to see his attitude over cross-rails. Does he have a metronomic canter? Other promising signs? 20K

Horse #3: Height okay, but a 4 yo sewing machine? Again, looking for other virtues, like breeding, temperament, etc. Still young and green, and those gaits don’t recommend: 10K

Horse #4: Way tall, would want excellent conformation and great PPE. What does “great jump” mean, beyond good form over fences? Again, looking for other virtues, like metronomic canter, eagerness, bravery… And how come he’s 8 and has no show record? I’d price this one on a par with #2, because each has one important virtue: 20K

All prices assume that claims in the ad are accurate. Very interested to see what others have to say…

OK, I’ll play.

I’d say that all of the ones with no or limited show experience would be worth around $15k, maybe more if they have great breeding and are a good mover, less if they were not really a “true” quality warmblood or bad mover.

For the one with lots of show experience, I’d say $25k.

My post disappeared, so if this shows up twice, I apologize.

I’d say for the ones with no or little show experience around $15k, maybe more if they have excellent breeding/good mover, less if they aren’t a “true” quality warmblood or are a bad mover.

For the one with extensive show experience and places ok at an average show, I’d say $25k.

For the most part I agree with this one…$15-20 for the ones with little experience. However, for the one with extensive show experience, i’m going to guess more like $50-60, particularly if Amateur (old lady) friendly.

They’re all papered WBs

$65K. I’m mystified. I suspect the lack of changes are because it was “made up” by an amateur. But at this stage of the game, I don’t know how much you can expect to fix non-ideal training. It’s a big oafy-looking horse. Yeah, it went to Cochella but it always was dead dead DEAD last so… who cares? That’s like stopping by campus to take a photo and then telling all your friends “I went to Princeton.”

$30K. This one was just kind of backburnered and then was kind of a lesson horse and then kind of a dressage horse and that’s why the changes weren’t really worked on. Yes good canter. Yes good raw material. Had this one been less, I would have made an offer… but it was priced firm and I just can’t see paying that for something so green at that age.

$35K. Mind blowing. Ya got me. I want what they’re drinking.

$50K nego and that seems about right to me. Nice horse, simple and straightforward. Can take you most anywhere. Not the winner in the best company but a horse that can go show most any place for most any 3’0 AA.

$30K. When I say a great jump I mean up and round and tight with his knees and a great bascule. A classic, good hunter type jump. This one was a really young kid’s horse and I just don’t think showing was in the cards. No real nefarious reason it didn’t show, it just didn’t.

See how all over the map they are? Who in their right mind would pay for #1 or even #2 or even #3 when #5 is out there? #4 seems like a right priced right horse type. The others are all a little green for their age or missing a little something… but the prices blow my mind.

Somewhat surprised at all but the one I guessed correctly, but can’t say i’m totally shocked, since i’ve seen the all over the map pricing on the sale pages in the 3 months since I decided to take the plunge and buy rather than lease. It’s disheartening to say the least.

I think that the one you guessed correctly is the one close to the “right” price that someone is actually going to get. I think the others are going to sit. Most of them have been for sale for a WHILE. #1 and #3 I think is just a crazy person, that’s all there is to it. #2 is a little off the mark and maybe too personally attached to see clearly but at least doesn’t think she’s sitting on the next golden goose. #1 and #3 think they have Rox Dene in their barns. #4 is priced right and will sell, I think. #5 is a bit overpriced for the greenness but at least has raw material to maybe make overpaying a bit worthwhile.

I would say #1, #2, #3 should also be in the $15-20Kish range and maybe #5 is $20-25ish range if he really floats your boat and is just what you want, even with the greenness. #4 seems about right to me.

Like I said, I’d have taken #2 home if it was priced right-- but I am just not at the stage yet where I want to pay that much for a horse not ready to step into the baby greens yet.

When I saw the first guesses, I was like nope, guarantee these are going to be way overpriced  I went through a phase where everything we inquired about was $50k. Didn’t matter what it had done or could do, or whether it was fancy, everyone that month wanted $50k because it was a warmblood and it was big, and they seemed to think that was good enough!

Well thank you for making me spit up half my diet coke all over my keyboard. wowsers is all I have to say to that.

Do people care if WB have papers? There are no classes for registered WB or are there?

There are breed awards. Not usually specific classes but end of the year awards and occasional specific classes. But most Hunter people don’t care. I was answering someone’s question up thread about whether these were roughly equivalent in breeding. In case someone cared about papers they all have them
