Horse Stable Budgetting

Most people don’t keep a tracking sheet. Some do, I’m sure. I don’t. I keep my horses at home.

But it’s impossible for us to estimate your costs because things like property, property taxes, hay, vet care, etc. can vary wildly from place to place. And from horse to horse. Some horses are accident prone. Others need special shoeing. I have two that are on meds, etc. Mine don’t show. I don’t pay a trainer currently, but I used to.

It would be impossible for someone to tell you how much to budget for property, a barn, repairs, maintenance, etc. What you can get in central NY is hugely different from my area of NY and nothing in comparison to properties closer to NYC.

What is your ultimate goal here? To know how much you need to save up before buying a horse property? Or to know the monthly expenses assuming you have a horse property?

Again - you would probably do better to create your own, based on prices in your area. But you could do it on paper, also. Excel isn’t magical. It just does the math for you.

Do you know what a check book register looks like? Are you familiar with Excel? I’m sorry, I’m not at all comfortable sending detailed financial information off into the void of the internet, and this really isn’t that difficult.

If you’re not familiar, Google check book register. Google free Excel courses. Think about what you need to get out of your tracking (why are you doing it, how do you want to look at your data?) and build a sheet to give you that.

OP, I tried sending you this one privately; not sure it worked. I do not nor have I ever had a farm, but I fantasize about it alot and if I ever were to get a farm, I might start with something like this spreadsheet. You want it to be really easy to see (and graph, and pie-chart, etc.) what your expenses are every month, and what your income is. Excel will do that for you; it’s easy once you figure it out. The numbers in this spreadsheet are just so you can see how Excel adds things up; they are not based on fact. And things like hay, you are probably going to buy months if not a year’s worth in advance, in real life. This spreadsheet assumes that the facility is already built, and assumes that any boarders you have would be paying the vet, farrier, etc. themselves.

If you are trying to figure out the cost of hay, assume every horse in the barn will eat 20lbs of good-quality hay a day. So, multiply the number of horses by days in the month, then convert to tons or bales, depending on what is sold in your area. So, if you had five horses, eating 20 lbs a day, that’s 100 lbs of hay a day. Times 30 days, is 3000 lbs., which is 1.5 tons. So, if good-quality hay is $1000 a ton (I have no idea; that is a total random number), your hay cost would be $1500 per month.

Same thing for bedding: figure out what kind of bedding you want to use, and then figure out how much bedding you’ll need each month, then multiply that by the cost of the bedding in your area.

You cannot cut corners on feed or bedding if you are boarding other people’s horses. Good boarders will not stand for this, and will leave.

More experienced people may have better advice!

thats why first I want to include all the elements in my sheet, once i confirm that nothing is missing ill proceed with my masterpiece, individual cost from a place to another is irrelevant, the main subject is the elements.

clearly u haven’t looked at the PDF I shared, its a copy from my excel i can do micro excel, above and beyond what or how you think my friend, i just wanted the support from our member friends if i missed any element or not that’s it, and i don’t want to see your financial numbers i just want to make sure if all the items i added sufficiently or i need to add more!

Why do you even need to know? And WHAT do you need to know? If you are planning on keeping horses in a barn at your home your spreadsheet is missing a LOT of things.

There is no way for anyone to give you a list of everything you might need. We don’t know if you have any property, any equipment, any horses, any tack, any supplies…or anything.

I bought my farm, I didn’t build it. So the barn was already there, as was fencing. But then I replaced all my fencing. And replaced my barn aisle, and my barn roof, and built an arena, and put in a stonedust paddock. Over the course of 10 years or so.

But not everyone has those expenses. Or there may be others. especially if you are buying property without a barn.

Then you have barn equipment - stall mats, wheelbarrows, pitchforks, tools, buckets, feed pans, water tanks, etc. Some of those are one time purchases, some are every few years, and others are more regular.

And then recurring expenses at your barn - feed, hay, supplements, fly spray, fly masks/boots, grooming supplies, etc.

And of course horse expenses - tack, blankets, halters.

And horse healthcare expenses - shoeing/trimming, vet care, dewormers, first aid supplies, medicines.

And farm maintenance expenses - fencing repairs, plumbing repairs, new roof, etc.

And then you have horse training expenses - trainers, lessons, hauling, etc.

And horse shows (if you show.)

I’m sure that’s not even a comprehensive list of categories, just off the top of my head. There is no way I could put a number on most of these items because I don’t track how often I buy fly spray, for example. But obviously most people could give you a sense of their monthly feed bills, etc. Which depends greatly on the horse, the area, etc.

that’s really handy, thanks a lot will be back soon

projected and actual expenses will vary

We got two new to us horses this last January, one could be awarded a gold star for keeping his stall the cleanest ever for a horse, the other she must party all night as she can trash the place completely then try to explain every morning that This Was Not My Fault as she flutters her eyes and nickers sweetly
