Horse transportation costs

The $1/mi figure is about right for a 1,000 mi trip in 2018 from western MA to Iowa. Single stall. Favorable factors in the cost were that 1) my destination was close to this hauler’s home base, 2) I’m just a few miles off I-80 and 3) my schedule was flexible so I could wait while he assembled a full load and efficient route.

This $1 per mile has not changed for decades which is strange since if adjusted for inflation it should be $3.11 per mile

Yup, I agree. Paid that dollar per mile back in the 90s, it’s unbelievable it’s still that price now.

Not disputing that costs seem abnormally flat, but CPI is not the right index for trucking. The more relevant index for trucking (below) predicts a 37% increase over 2003 prices, which is the farthest back I could go (without investing more time than it seems worth  )
I’d guess that part of the “flatness” is that relatively speaking, vehicles purchased today are way less expensive than they were in the 80s, relative to personal income, but that’s just a guess.

Regardless, I agree that we should be grateful for the cheap transportation we enjoy. It’s like what we pay for water-- at some point we’ll have a rude awakening to what it’s actually worth.

Well, in case it helps anyone else, for Austin-Seatle, Equine Express just quoted me $2300 for a box stall for each horse, and $2000 for the stall-and-a-half. For that price difference, I would get box stalls for all three. It’s less than I expected, honestly, although it does add up when you have three horses.

I shipped a horse about 18 months ago from MI to FL, but it was during the winter season where they were making that run at least once a week. it about 1300 miles and he was in a stall and a half on a semi-truck air ride trailer. It was $1200.

I just did this a couple years ago, and I HIGHLY recommend Holly Hill. They were totally fabulous. Let us pick the date, drivers were fantastic, horses arrived in perfect shape. We did the whole van for four horses and filled the rest with farm stuff–like the tractor etc. Two drivers went door to door. They were just wonderful to work with from start to finish.

I paid about $730 per horse when we moved from Virginia to Florida. The horses were well tended, and arrived about 15 hours after departure. I own a nice trailer, but was stressed about the move. Having them professionally shipped by a top company was well worth the money.

I had a horse shipped from Washington, DC to Kansas City three years ago. A well known national carrier quoted me $2000 just to get the mare to Lexington, KY at their layover place. A local carrier who does national routes was going to be at the Washington International Horse show dropping off horses on his way back to the midwest. He brought the mare to KC for $1200, in a box stall.

$1500/box stall NJ to Wellington. Some companies charge up to $2000 for the same trip. Very heavily travelled route.
