Everyone’s a critic!
My mare didn’t care at all. We live up north though, so she’s used to people wearing scarves over their faces in the winter. She was absolutely fascinated the first time I wore flower-patterned leggings to the barn and the first time she saw someone wearing polka-dotted gloves. And then there was the time I wore my work ID badge to the barn and couldn’t get near her until I took it off and put it in my pocket. Then she marched up like she always does. I’ve had her a few years now and she’s really not interested in what you’re wearing anymore, although she does like to lip at hats and play with zippers if she’s bored and you let her…
I’m pretty sure I have a puppy socialization checklist, circa spring 2019, that lists people in masks, casually along with wheelchairs, walkers, etc. Little did we know that one should have been in bold! (Luckily my dog is ok, even though I don’t remember specifically seeking out the masks back then).
I first started wearing N95 masks to the barn four years ago during the wildfires here in Sonoma County. My horse definitely did a double take the first time, but he quickly figured out it was just me! Now my dog gets all excited when I put a mask on because she knows it means we are going somewhere
My horses don’t seem to notice but my dog now licks my eyes instead of my nose when I am masked!
When my vet and his assistant were here on Tues, the three of us wore masks and my mustangs were a little bit… tense.
