My first husband and I honeymooned there too! I remember one of the owners saying to me at lunch after a particularly busy morning - “this isn’t a honeymoon, it’s a marathon”. It was a fun one though.
I also recommend White Stallion Ranch! Went there many times as a kid and loved it every time. Resort-style accommodations and daily riding from walking breakfast rides to the all-day ride through the Saguaro national park.
And also recommend riding vacation in Iceland. I’ve gone to Iceland on a riding vacation and have also done a day ride on a separate trip there. The riding trek was a 6-day ride through northern Iceland during the summer - you see such diverse landscape, learn to ride the tolt, and stay in farm houses along the way. Ishestar is a well-known, high quality company.
As to the once-a-week rider going on a riding vacation - I would try to get as much saddle time as you can leading up to it but you can also chose rides that accommodate your fitness and skill level. Otherwise, having good gear will help a lot with comfort.
Honestly, as long as you can stand. I did the Connemara Coast to Coast ride with Willie Leahy during a break in my riding. I wouldn’t recommend not riding beforehand, but I had taken lessons for a while so I could hop on something and do walk/trot/canter/small jumps. There were two groups going out at the same time, and my group was the more advanced one. I never felt like I held the group up, and we went as fast as the terrain allowed
I was incredibly sore the first few days, but it got better as the ride went on. I would recommend it 110%! Soreness is temporary, but the memories will last a lifetime!
@HorsesinHaiti even when you ride 1 hour every day, you WILL be sore the first few days of spending a whole day in the saddle! When I go on treks I always bring a “butt pad”, gel or sheepskin for my saddle. It helps for the 1st few days and depending on the saddle I get, it may stay on the whole time!
Some horse vacations I would be interested in, some day:
- Foxhunting in Ireland
- Dressage lessons/ trail riding in Spain
- Trekking in the Rockies
- Horse safari in Africa.
One can dream…
