How are your Feiner Stern's doing?

 I have a five year old. I adore him. He has been a joy to raise and train and ride and show. I love his character and I think he is gorgeous. I am biased! I have not shown him a lot, but this year he placed second in his Dressage Suitability class at Devon and finished in the USDF top ten for Material 4&5 y/o Stallions and Geldings division. He is 16-2 and his dam was 16 H.

Thank you!

I have always liked your FS mare horsecrazy. There certainly is alot of the Furioso coming through in her! The thought has crossed my mind to breed my First Class mare to him, in hopes to get something similar![/QUOTE]

Thank you very much on the compliment!! She is a sweetie and lately since she has been broke (this year), she is a bit “put off” when I ride another. She thinks that SHE should be MY ONLY Horse to ride!! Even if I had just rode her—she will whinney and stomp her feet, shake her head. She loves to work and is so natural… oh, wait–I was thanking you!! Sorry, I started thinking of my little BIG girl!! LOL

HEY Six pound… NICE horses!!! So, I’m really liking my compliment now!! WHEW you have good taste!

bump

FWIW, just wanted to mention I have seen him also recently in person. He is in Southern California in Valley Center, with reproductive specialist Dr. Richard Tramp at Exclusively Equine Reproduction. He’s a storybook warmblood stallion, this huge black perfectly formed animal, and he was quiet and sweet too in spite of spending a lot of time in the barn.

really thnx for the post!!!

will he be available again?

As far as I know, he is available NOW. By fresh shipped or frozen.

I’ve been trying to reach Heike about him, if anyone talks to her please have her call me!

Hope it’s ok to post the number of the farm where Feiner Stern lives: Dr. Richard Tramp, Exclusively Equine Reproduction - (760) 751-0867.

Hope that helps, since you can’t get in touch with the owner right now.

I sent an email to Dr RT a week ago to inquire but have not yet received a response

I would definitely try the phone. I don’t know if he pays much attention to his computer. He often answers quickly and calls back pretty quickly as well, although I think he has a little trouble hearing at times. I think I had the best luck in the afternoon. Must be the nicest man on the planet.

Hey, how did I miss this thread?

I apparantly have a FS throwback. Feinesse (Tessa) is a coming 3 black filly who is the most independent, intelligent, devious, obnoxious, and occasionally evil horse I have ever worked with. Her dam was fairly independent and had her opinions but she was also willing and sweet. Tessa clamors for your attention but when you give it to her she won’t hesitate to bite you if you turn your back to her. She is also a VERY awkward grower and is about 16.1 currently and still very undeveloped. Her movement is not very good and I have had a couple of vets look at her (I’ve posted about it before). I am basically waiting until I can afford to have a full set of xrays done on her - but she will likely not be started until she is 4. I am observing a fair amount of stifle “slipping” behind on a regular basis and she moves stiffly behind. Her bloodwork was normal including a muscle enzyme test and she passed a neuro exam. Conformationally, she is fabulous, and she is drop dead gorgeous, pure black with a star. I am hoping that she is just a horrible, awkward grower because she is going to be very large. Her dam was just 16.1.

Here she is last summer, just after a bath:

Wow, gorgeous!!!

When I saw Feiner Stern, he was just HUGE. I don’t know how tall he actually is but he’s got to be 17 hands at least. He just looked monstrously large. So if her dam is only 16.1 I would guess your filly is probably an awkward grower. Definitely keep the faith tht she’s going to turn out well eventually! If she’s intelligent she probably wants to be playing with other young ones all the time, hence the biting. There’s that phase where they have all of their biting games and it’s their favorite thing to do. I call them “bite fights”. Both of my fillies did that and of course my colt. They would do it by the hour out in the field and then try to do it with me too.

Just rambling here, good luck with your beauty!

I had a gangly FS baby who also had early stifle issues (at least through 5 years of age). I did a lot of the strengthening exercises recommended throughout COTH and he has more or less out grown the stifle issue and gangliness. Incidentally my dressage trainer mentioned to me that she had a FS foal who also was prone to biting and she was very happy to sell him. Mine has always been curious but gentle. I’d say stick it out and do the usual consistent ground work and lots of trail riding, low caveletti and hills. Good luck and she is beautiful!

I should clarify. She doesn’t play-bite, and she’s not mouthy. What she is is very, very dominant and she tries to establish dominance at every opportunity. She’s actually sweet, loves attention, but if she will constantly, constantly test. If I have a halter on she is mostly respectful, but will try to keep inching into your space, little things to challenge you. Loose, she is just awful. You have to have a weapon of some sort if you go into her pasture when she is loose. If you stand on the other side of the fence, she will come up to you and beg for attention, but if you take your eyes off of her for a second her ears go back and she will try to nail you with teeth, and if you punish her, she won’t hesitate to turn around and try to nail you with both hind feet. We have had many “discussions” that aren’t too pretty. She mostly respects me now (but still watches for any weak moment she can take advantage of) but strangers are another thing altogether. She’s really a monster, and if she weren’t so darned awkward and uncomfortable in her movement, I’d say she needs a job.

I am glad to hear that the stifle issues aren’t that uncommon and they do grow out of them. I am getting a full set of hind stifle, hock and fetlock xrays with my tax return money…because I am tired of worrying over her every time I see that hind end slip.

My girl was bitchy when I weaned her foal from her… WOW!! (THIS IS SHOWING MY STUPID SIDE) I thought I’d bring her foal over to say hi. I had his pasture mate in one hand and him in another. I was staying away from the fence out of danger, I turned around to push the boys away a bit out of my space. Then WHAM—she lunged over the fence at the colt (I believe) but, bit me on my shoulder. She had NEVER EVER even tried to bite as a foal or before this. She bit me HARD–I have a nasty nasty scar. One that sticks up–they call it a “Keeloid”? Gross. ANYWAY, the next day my cousin came out with his new baby. Paul was letting her nuzzle his human baby and she just lightly rested her lips on the baby and was like in another wolrd—passionate about this baby??? Because of the incident the day before, I immediatly stepped in and told Paul what happened and felt she was unpredictable right now. I motioned her away and she went to leave, but bit my hand as she was leaving? The next few weeks I really really pushed the fact that I"M THE BOSS. She has never showed that side of her again. I don’t know if it was just the hormones–the teat pain, the fact it was her first foal and was confused??? She is very smart and emotional–always has been. She is one of those horses that totally understands the human language very well. I think she really held it against me for weeks that I took her foal away from her. ?? She has things that she is demanding about like----doesn’t like being out of in the pasture past sunset, almost demands her fan in the summer, she wants to be the first horse to be worked—if she isn’t she will paw and spin-buck in her stall and whinnie at me. She also will have a fit, if she doesn’t get her supplements and a few bites of her pellets in the morning before I work her. Her tantrum for instance, if I say–trot, she will canter—and fling her head at me and behind me will kick out (she is far away, but letting me know how she feels). I have always handled her different because of her personality. She is a Prima Donna—she acts like she would like the trumpets to play as she exits her stall with red carpet layed with rose peddles.

She has never been mean–except that moment–which wasn’t that pretty right after, she recieved a “bite”–well a couple right back.

I had a trainer who when I was describing her personality—she said—oh, I’ll get that out of her! To me, she thinks she is special, I treat her like that. She is sooooo trainable and loves to work. She LOVES me so much and when out in a herd, she protects me from other horses–if there is a commotion. I wouldn’t want someone to “get that out of her”, it has never been a problem, she is just like a major “DQ”…in the horse sense. LOL But, she has the presence of a stallion, a lot of people think that she is because of her presence. She walks out and everyone turns to look and ewwes and awwes. I like it.

I also have 2 filly’s totally opposite of her—major “tomboys”. LOL! I don’t think I could handle more than one of her LOL!

Her dam was the sweetest mare in the world and is going to the Special Olympics with a person who can’t walk is riding her doing 2nd level. Just to show you how special she is.

This mare has so much of her dam and looks almost identical in color/markings—but looks like her daddy in body.

Anyway, I would not give up, maybe she is wanting more attention.

She is gorgeous… maybe she just wants more “special” attention like my girl.

UPDATE!

Thought you all might like to hear an update on my FS filly!

A couple of months ago I spent $1000 on xrays of her hocks, stifles and fetlocks - and found essentially nothing (a small possible OCD in her right stifle but not conclusive). Vet’s orders? Start her going under saddle - spending a couple months doing conditioning work first, and if she goes lame, re-evaluate her.

So, I contemplated sending her to a trainer. But, since all she needed to start with was fitness work, surely I could do that, right? Turns out I could. All my little princess needed was a little physical maturity so her body was on her side, and a little consistency - never letting her get away with not going forward for one second and working her several days a week - and voila, I have a horse!! One that, in two weeks time, wears a saddle, a bridle, side reins, and walks/trots/canters/halts on the lunge line on command. Her temper tantrums are becoming fewer and farther between, and she’s really becoming quite a joy to work with! I cannot tell you what an accomplishment this is, as I had almost all but given up on her ever being safe or fun to ride.

And most amazing of all though, is that her movement is starting to turn around. She seems to find trotting more comfortable now, and while she’s still pretty lazy, I am starting to see moments on the lunge that are truly breathtaking. I had long ago resigned myself to the fact that I had, at best, an average mover.

So, here she is! She turned 3 on April 14th. She is currently 16h at the withers and 16.1 at the butt, and obviously still growing. She has lost her withers again, so she’s going to shoot up in height here again soon. I expect her to finish about 16.3-17h.
