How do I find out which registry this horse belongs to???

You are searching for a needle in the haystack unless you have an idea of who the sire is at least.

Actually I just had my rescue mare DNA’ed by Holsteiner. We found out who her sire is. 65.00, Samples get sent to UC Davis. You can also send sample to Davis to find out which breed your horse is associated with.

That was probably because Davis already had related records on file. OP’s horse was imported and of unknown registry.

What parameters did UCD have to work within?

He should have been presented at a keuring in europe, I presume he is German, so a keuring in Germany, at which time, as a 6 or 8 month old, he’d been branded if his registry was still branding then or chipped. The brand would be on the left flank, and sometimes you have to shave or wet that location to see the brand. Then you contact the registry. All the German registries are great about helping us Americans learn about our horses.
Good luck with your new horse and thanks for getting him. Rescued is great.
Branding is done when the foal is young, around 6 to 8 months of age.

I was told my mare was Holsteiner/ TB cross. I had her tested against the stallions from the Oaks, but to no avail…then just for the thrill of doing it I guess, they ran her DNA against all Holsteiner stallions that have DNA on file…Cotopaxi matched. I had never heard of this stallion, so googling him lately and learning all about him. JB, I am not sure how they do it. I do know people who send in hair samples to find out what breed their horse might be too. I only was going on what I was told. Now they also tested her against 3 foals that were born in her year ( supposedly she is 9 yrs old) out of TB mares bred to Cotopaxi, but she did not match any of them…Holsteiner registry has been very helpful during this dna hunt!
