How do you answer questions from non-horsey folks?

I don’t get too offended if someone asks how much it costs to keep a horse. I think most people have no idea and are just curious. I just explain what the expenses are and explain that one can certainly spend more (ours live at home). If they ask how much a horse costs I usually say well that’s kind of like asking how much a car costs (like cars, they can range from a used econo-box to a custom made lamborghini). But I am happy to share what I spent on my girl- she was a bargain barely above $1000.

and then there’s the guy that just giggles when you mention riding your horse …[/QUOTE]

Or asks if you ride “bareback” a lot … then leers at you…nudge nudge wink wink…

I got into a conversation once with someone about liability waivers and insurance at the barn where I board. She was talking about how she was going to take her kid to one of those trampoline places where kids can just bounce all over everything, and the trampoline place wanted her to sign a waiver. She was horrified and wouldn’t do it. I told her that’s really not an unusual concept, and that my barn requires a waiver on file for anyone who’s going to so much as sit on a horse. She asked why, and I explained that it’s because of insurance purpose, and that people need to be aware that accidents can happen, and horses are living, breathing animals and we can’t guarantee every second of their behavior. She told me she’d never take her kid somewhere to ride where the horses are so dangerous we require waivers. I told her that’s NOT what I said, accidents can happen with the sweetest, quietest horses on the planet. She responded that she’d never take her kid to ride somewhere where she may fall off the horse.

Ok then. I guess your kid’s never riding.

The question I’ve been hearing a lot lately is what I do with my horse in the cold. It’s been below zero here lately, so it’s been pretty cold! I tell them he’s got a blanket on and he’s fine, and that horses can handle cold weather better than people can.

The giggles, leers, winks and nudges could be handled. Sadly I knew people who actually asked if riding, especially bareback, ended in “satisfaction” for me. Amazingly many of these people are considered well educated and members of “better social class”.
